Love is superior, family is mighty, and we were put here, not for ourselves, but for each other. These are the core values that were passed down to me from my grandfather. Don't chase the chickens, because one day, one might just chase you back; beer is more than just a breakfast drink; and do what you want, not what you're told - these were also some things of value that were passed down to me from Grandpa. Growing up just down the hill from my grandfather and his chickens taught me more about life than anything that I could've learned in school (had I paid attention). Learning how to stand up for myself, to lend a helping hand, to nurture, and to protect the things I love, are just a few of the lessons that I learned while crossing that grassy path between his house and mine. Life Lessons from Grandpa and His Chicken Coop is a book about love, family, youth, maturing, and all the learning that happens in between. It is a powerful, humorous, insightful, playful, ornery, and philosophical narrative about perspective and the lessons that I have learned from growing up just as ornery as my ornery grandfather and his damn chickens.

As the boy learns what it means to enthusiastically listen and absorb knowledge on tribal leadership, he discovers the value of seeking not just an academic education, but also a cultural one in order to close a widening gap and keep his ancestorial history alive. When life comes full circle and changes everything, the boy must come to grips with the loss of his mentor, his role model, and the one who made him proud to be a peasant and grandson of a tribal leader. Afternoons with Grandpa shares the story of a boy’s cherished relationship with his grandfather as he hears tales about his tribal culture, his grandpa’s leadership and the experiences of the generations before him.

(Duke) Hobbs and has been published by Lulu.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-24 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In A Dime's Worth of Paper Plates, the author calls himself "a typical guy who became a teenager during the Depression years and became a man during World War II." Duke begins with his ancestors' history in Norway and their emigration to Iowa in 1892. His grandfather acquired a number of farms in the Norwegian community in central Iowa, and the author lived on one of these farms as a child. His childhood is idyllic, though the Depression and the Dust Bowl years take their toll on the adults in the community. His stepfather takes a job in Pecos, Texas in 1936 and the family adjusts to a new life in this little "cow town." Following a year of college, Duke joins the army in 1944 and after training at Ft. Hood is sent overseas for two years. He serves in Company "F," 314th Infantry, 79th Division in the European Theater. After the war, he returns to Texas A&M to complete his degree. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the air Force, he serves four years as an intelligence officer during the Korean War.
