In the past few years the transplantation of organs in man has received publicity unprecedented in medical history. The first heart grafts were covered by press, radio, and television on a scal~ equiva lent to the news of the outbreak of a major war. Unwarranted and extravagant optimism has been followed by bitter criticism. This has undermined public confidence in the medical profession and seriously impeded progress in an important endeavour aimed at reducing human suffering. This unfortunate situation has arisen from widespread ignorance amongst the public and the medical profession of the background, present achievements, and future potential of organ grafting. Short statements by experts, frequently misquoted or cut short by television interviewers, and misinformed derogatory pronouncements by prejudiced medically qualified men, with no knowledge of the field, have produced a sorry state of confusion. It is the purpose of this book to attempt to clarify organ transplantation. The principles of organ transplantation are common to all organs but I will confine most of the discussion to transplantation of four vital organs, namely the kidney, liver, heart, and lung. Analyzing one of the most dramatic of the new medical technologies--Organ Transplantation--Gift of Life covers those aspects that have general implications for public policy and sociological theory, and describes the social-psycho-logical impact of kidney transplantation itself. Gift of Life beginswith an examination of the overall, unresolved ethical issues related to kidney transplan-tation--the problem of selecting patients for a scarce therapy.., the problem of withholding treatment from patients of greater physical and psychological risk ... the issue of utilizing living related kidney donors vs. cadaver donors. The book concentrates on organ donors and their families, and studies the effect of this type of extreme altruism. It also examines the stress for the family as the members try to decide who, if anyone, will give a kidney. The work shows how individuals and families make major decisions under stress. Discussed in detail are family communication processes and emotional relationships between donor and recipient, as well as the impact of donation upon the family of the cadaver-donor. The final analysis deals with the health care delivery issues and the questions of funding created by the rapid rise of this new technology. Gift of Life, with its exposition of decision making communication, and reaction to stress, is of relevance to social science theory and policy.

Two men. One donor. And one last chance to live life to the fullest. Other than their shared affinity for the water, you couldn't invent two men who were more different than swimmer Fred Nelis and sailor Gordon Veldman. One a steady, disciplined, reserved Catholic business leader and family man. The other man an impulsive and colorful serial monogamist and atheist. Yet, they would come to share the rarest of bonds when each received a second chance at life and vitality because of one generous organ donor. Dubbed the Transplant Brothers by the media, Fred and Gordon were already casual friends when they found themselves waiting for the news that the organs they needed to survive had become available. Remarkably, the men would end up at the same hospital at the same time receiving a heart and a pair of lungs from the same donor, linking them for the rest of their lives in ways most of us couldn't understand. In these pages you'll encounter fear, hardship, and many obstacles that were hard to surmount. But you will also encounter hope, faith, perseverance, and healing as Fred and Gordon walk the transplant tightrope with friends and family alongside them.

It is a reality that someone in Canada dies every three days waiting for an organ transplant; for some patients, they are lying in their hospital beds, waiting to be given a second chance at life. Some are fortunate to receive that organ or gift of life, yet for many, they don’t survive because the organ they require is either not available or doesn’t get there in time. Christine Jowett was only thirteen years old when she became jaundiced, fatigued, and endured bouts of right abdominal pain. Having lived with autoimmune hepatitis for twenty-six years, Christine’s disease finally took its toll on her and she ended up in St. Mary’s Hospital, where she works as a cardiology nurse. In order to save her life, she was then sent to Toronto General Hospital to wait for a liver transplant, yet, her situation continued to deteriorate as her kidneys were shutting down. Now at forty-one years old, a mother and a wife, it still remains a mystery as to why Christine developed chronic autoimmune hepatitis, a disease that for so long through her life she was able to manage with few medications. Life Goes On is a moving story of her life, which tells of her sickness, facing up to the possibility of losing her family, and the struggle to regain the normality of life after her operation. After the tragic death of an anonymous hero, Christine is given the ultimate gift of life, a healthy organ, on one very special day.
