The conversation which I had the good fortune to have with your Royal Highness, mingled with your detailed and minute knowledge of all the sad events of Afghanistan, did not only cause sensations of surprise in me, but was a source of proud gratification as showing that the conduct and zeal of public servants abroad, whether English or foreigner, are justly noticed and appreciated by so dignified a personage as your Royal Highness. Taking all the preceding points into consideration, I am utterly at a loss how to show my heartfelt gratitude, and in what manner to lay my unfeigned homage and devoted attachment at the feet of your gracious Majesty and your Royal Highness but by dedicating this work - the unworthy endeavours of my feeble pen in a foreign language. He was consequently very unwilling to proceed; and therefore he put it off from day to day, hoping that the reinforcements from India might soon arrive, and that he might then co-operate with them to destroy the enemy. The rebels began to suspect him for being friendly disposed to the British; and Mir Haji, the fanatic priest of Kabul, pitched out his tent, and proclaimed his avowed intention of proceeding to Jelalabad, and inviting all the Musulmans to join him. The Navab Mohammed Zaman Khan was secretly intriguing with the Haji against the Amin Ullah, and at the same time desirous to become a powerful man in Kabul. All the nobles insisted upon the Shah marching with the Haji; and the Navab sent his wife at night to the King in the palace, with a written agreement in the Qoran that he was devotedly attached to his Majesty, and will faithfully promote the interest of his government. On this assurance of the Navab Mohammed Zaman Khan, the head of the Barakzais, being conveyed and communicated to his Majesty by a female of such distinction as his (the Navib's) wife, he fixed the day of his march for the THE SHAH FIRED UPON. 441 5th of April.
