Excerpt from Life on the Farm, or Scientific Agriculture Simplified: A Reading Book, for Grammar and High Schools Life on the farm now is not what it used to be. The general development of the age accounts for this. Each year adds something new to the agricultural field, and not infrequently are these new things so complex in their nature that the broadest scientific knowledge is required for their interpretation and use. There is probably no other industry in which so many branches of science enter as farming; nearly the whole list can be used in some way or other. This volume is designed, primarily, as a reader, or text-book, in rural schools of agricultural regions; but we think it could be used with profit in both village and city schools. Pupils can learn to read by reading about real things which are in close touch with their daily lives, and which they wish to remember, as well by reading about remote, fictitious things which they can not and do not care to remember. First-hand knowledge should be learned before any other. The things to be studied on a farm are full of interest, beauty, and utility. Farming For Us All written by Michael Mayerfeld Bell and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-20 with Social Science categories.

Climate change. Habitat loss. Soil erosion. Groundwater depletion. Toxins in our food. Inhumane treatment of farm animals. Increasing farm worker exploitation. Hunger and malnutrition in the midst of plenty. What will it take for farmers in the United States to embrace sustainable practices? Michael Mayerfeld Bell’s Farming for Us All first tackled this question twenty years ago, providing crucial insight into how the structure of US agriculture created this situation and exploring, by contrast, the practices of farmers who are working together to radically change how they think, learn, and grow. This updated edition of his now-classic work reflects on the lessons learned over the past two decades. Constrained by an oppressive nexus of markets, regulations, subsidies, and technology, farmers find themselves undermining their own economic and social security as well as the security of the land. Bell turns to Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), that state’s largest sustainable-agriculture group. He traces how PFI creates an agriculture that engages others—farmers, researchers, officials, and consumers—in a common conversation about what agriculture could look like. Through dialogue, PFI members crossbreed knowledge, discovering pragmatic solutions to help crops grow in ways that sustain families, communities, societies, economies, and environments. Farming for Us All makes the case that for sustainable farming to flourish, new social relations are as important to cultivate as new crops. This book is necessary—and hopeful—reading for anyone concerned about the present and future of food and farming.

Excerpt from Complete Farmer's Guide: Fundamentals of Farming and Farm Life It was also the purpose of the authors to provide a book that did not stop with giving mere advice about farm prae tices to be memorized by the pupils, but taught first of all the fundamental principles of plant and animal growth and reproduction and of soil management. In this way the pupils are made able to understand the reasons for farm practices and to criticise any old or new practice independently. By emphasizing these far-reaching principles first, the thousand and one details of practice in the study of farm crops and animal husbandry which are later given become a matter for simple reasoning instead of a mere dead weight to be carried in memory. In order still further to develop the powers of observation, exercise the reason, and connect the lessons with the daily life and home needs of the pupils, lists of suggestive questions, exercises, and problems are provided for each subject. It is an astonishing fact that no text-book has given to the work of the farmer girls and farmers' wives more than a pass ing mention. Undoubtedly, the conditions in the country schools make this problem difficult, but it is believed that, with the aid of the experts in domestic economy and rural teaching who generously co - operated, a very valuable be ginning has been made in this text in enabling the school to give somewhat the same preparation for her life work on the farm to the farmer girl that is now given to the farmer boy. We have in general tried to broaden the conception of the course in elementary agriculture from that of a mere treatise on raising plants and animals for sale to that of a means of preparation for living intelligently and happily, as well as profitably, on the farm. It is a great pleasure to express here our appreciation of the assistance generously given by our colleagues in prepar ing this book.
