"Half a dozen Indians sprung upon me, some holding down my arms, others my legs, another astride my body with his hand upon my throat." Only Nelson Lee and three of his cowboy companions survived the brutal assault that had come upon them during the night. Their fate was not to be killed instantly but instead to go through the process of being tortured to death in tribal rituals at a later date. But Nelson Lee did not die. Instead he survived his ordeal and went on to spend three years with the Comanches, being sold as a slave between various Comanche warriors, from Big Wolf to Spotted Leopard and finally to Rolling Thunder who he was eventually able to escape from. His record of that time provides a fascinating insight into life with the Comanche tribe in the mid-19th century. Prior to being captured Nelson Lee had been a Texas Ranger who had served under John Hays and had fought against Native Americans during the Indian Wars, but never before had he come in such close contact with how they lived and their customs. Walter Prescott Webb stated that "there is no better description of the life of the Texas Rangers than that of Nelson Lee." Another scholar stated "His experiences in captivity are of vivid interest, and afford a most minute and detailed account of the manners and customs of the tribe." Other historians have been less convinced about the validity of some of Lee's claims, but even if some of the tales told within the memoir are rather tall it remains a captivating book of life on the Texan frontier amongst the Comanches. Nelson Lee's book Three Years Among the Comanches was published in New York in 1859 after Lee had escaped captivity.

Novelist Larry McMurtry loaned a collection of glass plate negatives to the University of Texas Press for investigation. "Most appear to be the work of pioneer woman photographer Alice Snearly and her brother-in-law Lon Kelly, who worked in the heart of Comanche territory on the Texas-Oklahoma border. These images preserve the "interim" generation of Comanches ... who endured reservation life and forced moves to individual allotments of farm and ranch land .. A few images of Anglo settlers and towns complete the picture of life in Indian Territory at this moment of change."--Publisher description.

This narrative has been recorded, as received from Nelson Lee's lips, from day to day, not precisely in his own words, inasmuch as he is not an educated, though an intelligent man, but his history is told substantially as he relates it. Of the entire truth of his statements, however marvelous many of them may appear, or however much the incredulous may be inclined to dispute, there can be no reasonable doubt. Evidences corroborating them are abundant. He bears upon his person the visible scars of all the wounds he is represented as having received in the border wars of Texas, and while a prisoner among the Indians. He is familiar, to the minutest detail, with the history of those stirring times when Jack Hays, and Ben McCullough, and Ewen Cameron, at the head of the hardy Rangers were wont to sally forth from the grand square of San Antonio, to uphold the banner of the "lone star'' against Mexican domination.

Empire Of The Summer Moon written by S.C. Gwynne and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-07 with History categories.

In the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all. Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second is the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches. Although readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined just how and when the American West opened up. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six; full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. White settlers arriving in Texas from the eastern United States were surprised to find the frontier being rolled backward by Comanches incensed by the invasion of their tribal lands. Against this backdrop Gwynne presents the compelling drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, a nine-year-old girl who was kidnapped by Comanches in 1836. She grew to love her captors and became infamous as the "White Squaw" who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. More famous still was her son Quanah, a warrior who was never defeated and whose guerrilla wars in the Texas Panhandle made him a legend. S. C. Gwynne's account of these events is meticulously researched, intellectually provocative, and, above all, thrillingly told.

Among the many captive narratives of the nineteenth century, Nelson Lee's stands out as one of the most thrilling and authentic. A longtime Texas Ranger, Lee was captured by Comanches and held for three long, grueling years before making his escape.Once free, he nearly lost his mind and his life during the two months it took him to make his way to a settlement. Alone, lonely, completely worn out, and uncertain of where he was, he was barely able to persevere.Back in his native state of New York, this book was compiled and published very shortly after his return. It is invaluable for its descriptions of Comanche life and the life of Texas Rangers in mid-century.Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the movement that changed the country forever.

Mr. Babb, a descendant of resolute venturesome pioneer stock, entered upon an eventful boyhood in the untamed wilds of the western border of Texas in a locality and period when the mounted Indian marauder with his panoply of war and death was often seen silhouetted against the distant horizon, at a time when the spectre of tragedy and desolation, of atrocious massacre, mutilation, captivity, and torture, cast its terrifying shadow athwart the fireside of every pioneer home; when, unheralded, cunning monsters of vindictive savage hate, here and there among the settlers, in unguarded repose or fancied security, sprang from stealthy ambush, from the wood-land's dark border, the sheltering hillside and gulch, or the shadowy lustre of an unwelcome fateful full moon, amid and unheeding the shrieks of horror and frenzied slaughter, mingled with the cries of anguish and prayers of women and children kneeling before their doom, they struck with the fangs of the most vicious, merciless, and unreasoning beast, and in their unrestrained and unresisted madness and ferocity, they left in the crimson wake a sickening chapter of ghastly human wreckage of whole families exterminated, in either a fiendish butchery or revolting captivity without a counter part in all the annals of every race and age since the hour of the dawn of Christendom, if not since the world began.
