Seven-year-old Lilli was fed up because she had the measles and couldn't go to school. She also couldn't go to the park, and there was just no one with whom she could play. Then Lilli discovers an orchard at the bottom of her garden. It is there she meets Measles McGuire, a large and colourful bird, who sometimes becomes a bit confused. Suddenly it seems quite normal for Lilli to discover that pigeons can knit and a thrush needs to wear spectacles And why had she never noticed the orchard before? Lilli meets wise old Major Crow of the 1st Wing Battalion, who is, of course, retired. The major keeps an eye on everyone in the orchard to make sure all is well. The other creatures she meets are the Wood Pigeon cousins, Gladys and Bertha. Gladys loves to knit scarves, while Bertha has become a little scatterbrained over the years. Then there's Bordetti Buggoso, the famous opera-singing bug. Lilli is thrilled with her new friends, and your children will be too. Come along as Lilli's adventures take her into a world she never knew existed, one in her very own backyard. Author Christine Aston has always wanted to be a writer and is still a child at heart. She wrote bedtime stories for her children when they were young and has since published magazine articles. Born in London and raised in Cornwall, Aston now lives in a village on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border. She is inspired by authors Lewis Carroll and Enid Blyton, and would like to write more children's books in this series. Throughout the Middle Ages, enormously popular bestiaries presented people with descriptions of rare and unusual animals, typically paired with a moral or religious lesson. The real and the imaginary blended seamlessly in these books—at the time, the existence of a rhinoceros was as credible as a unicorn or dragon. Although audiences now scoff at the impossibility of mythological beasts, there remains an extraordinary willingness to suspend skepticism and believe wild stories about nature, particularly about insects and their relatives in the Phylum Arthropoda. In The Earwig’s Tail, entomologist May Berenbaum and illustrator Jay Hosler draw on the powerful cultural symbols of these antiquated books to create a beautiful and witty bestiary of the insect world. Berenbaum’s compendium of tales is an alphabetical tour of modern myths that humorously illuminates aerodynamically unsound bees, ear-boring earwigs, and libido-enhancing Spanish flies. She tracks down the germ of scientific truth that inspires each insect urban legend and shares some wild biological lessons, which, because of the amazing nature of the insect world, can be more fantastic than even the mythic misperceptions.

Who would guess that a simple Advent wreath would light the way to solving a Christmastide mystery in a small English village? Well, when Berdie Elliott—the local vicar's wife and former investigative reporter—gets the scent, anything can happen. Though Berdie's husband often disapproves, her divine gift of sorting truth from lies puts her in the stew. Along with her best friend, Lillie, Berdie unwraps far more than Christmas presents when an Advent gathering at the vicarage goes awry, and murder rocks the village. Lively newcomers, secret identities, a clandestine wedding, and a dissenting constable add to the adventure of unraveling the mystery that Berdie—to the delight of the entire village—finally ties up like a bright Christmas bow. Tea and biscuits anyone? Formerly released as Advent of a Mystery.

Few, if any, have heard this story—and with good reason. This is not a tale about the future but a chronicle of hushed-up events in the recent past. The events and dates herein are accurately documented, but the names of certain participants and the true locations of events have been changed to protect the quick and the dead, along with national security. Details of Part I of this chronicle were provided first-hand to your reporter by two humans, a man and a woman, who played key roles in this astounding account. I am sworn to secrecy regarding their names, but I am allowed to report that the woman was, at one time, a respected federal intelligence agent and the man is the respected CEO of an international company. I am not allowed to even hint at who provided details of Part II. Suffice it to say, if anyone could know those details, he is the man I personally met with during his brief return to “Riverside, California” in 2007. I can only guess from where he arrived and to where he returned.
