Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.

Indonesia dikenal sebagai bangsa yang memiliki pluralitas dari segi agama dan pemahaman agama. Hal ini dapat bersifat positif dan negatif, tergantung kepada bangsa ini untuk mengelolanya. Bersifat positif jika dikelola dengan baik dan tepat, sehingga pluralitas tersebut menjadi modal dalam membangun karena adanya kerukunan dan stabilitas dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara. Bersifat negatif jika salah kelola, sehingga akan memunculkan konflik dan destabilitas. Dalam rangka membangun kerukunan dan stabilitas dalam kehidupan beragama, pemerintah telah banyak melakukan regulasi. Juga membentuk institusi yang ditujukan untuk menjaga kerukunan. Salah satunya adalah Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama. Selain itu, pemerintah mendorong agar kelompok-kelompok agama juga berkonstribusi dalam kegiatan kerukunan tersebut. Karena itu, sejak lama (tahun 1969-an) sudah ada Wadah Musyawarah Umat Beragama. Keanggotaan wadah tersebut terdiri dari wakil masing-masing umat beragama yang diakui oleh negara. Misalnya Majelis Ulama Indonesia dari Islam, Persekutuan Gereja Indonesia (PGI) dari Kristen, Konferensi Waligereja Indonesia (KWI) dari Katolik. Dalam penelitian kelompok-kelompok agama tersebut disebut dengan Lembaga Berorientasi Pengembangan Kerukunan Umat Beragama (LB-PKUB). Adapun FKUB disebut dengan konsil keagamaan di bidang kerukunan.
