Ce livre est conscracré à l’histoire des populations indigènes du nord-ouest de l’Amazonie depuis la fin du xvie siècle jusqu’au milieu du xviiie siècle. Plus exactement, notre objet d’étude concerne le rôle et l’évolution des chefferies indiennes dans le double contexte des relations interethniques et des entreprises coloniales européennes. Au cours de cette période, les grandes puissances européennes – France, Angleterre, Espagne, Portugal et Hollande – se sont employées à accroître leur domaine colonial en Amérique du Sud. C’est ainsi qu’on assiste, d’une part, dès le début de la conquête des terres américaines, à un processus de transfert dans les aires de colonisation des conflits politiques qui opposent les grandes puissances. D’autre part, les missionnaires portugais ont implanté systématiquement des villages de catéchèse au sein des populations indigènes pour ouvrir la voie à la colonisation portugaise et à une première urbanisation de la vallée de l’Amazone. Toutes ces interventions tirent parti des réseaux politiques indigènes et tiennent compte des hiérarchies internes et des positions de pouvoir autochtone qui existaient au moment de l’arrivée des Européens. Missions et expéditions militaires entraînèrent des guerres interethniques en faisant des chefferies indigènes des médiateurs préférentiels.

Voir l'espace en tant que paysage est déjà une construction de l'esprit et pas seulement une perception de l'œil ; celle-ci d'ailleurs passe par une représentation, elle est toujours une recréation, ce qui pose le problème de l'encodage utilisé. Une médiation s'est imposée, celle d'un genre artistique ou d'une forme énonciative, celle du lieu, de l'époque, de la culture dans laquelle est observé et représenté et commenté le paysage. L'imaginaire et toutes ses facettes y ont la part belle, les paysages renvoient à de multiples traits culturels. Le numéro 26 de la revue América a offert une première série de travaux sur ce sujet. La deuxième série que voici accorde la plus grande part de son attention à l'imaginaire littéraire, dans sa relation avec les données naturelles et les forces élémentaires. Le paysage urbain est un deuxième volet, envisagé parfois comme volonté socio-culturelle de transformation de l'espace habité.
