The present review covers a very neglected field in regeneration studies, namely, tissue and organ regeneration in reptiles, especially represented by the lizard model of regeneration. The term “regeneration” is intended here as “the ability of an adult organism to recover damaged or completely lost body parts or organs.” The process of recovery is further termed “restitutive regeneration” when the lost part is reformed and capable of performing the complete or partial physiological activity performed by the original, lost body part. Lizards represent the only amniotes that at the same time show successful organ regeneration, in the tail, and organ failure, in the limb (Marcucci 1930a, b; Simpson 1961, 1970, 1983). This condition offers a unique opportunity to study at the same time mechanisms that in different regions of the same animal control the success or failure of regeneration. The lizard model is usually neglected in the literature despite the fact that the lizard is an amniote with a basic histological structure similar to that of mammals, and it is therefore a better model than the salamander (an a- mniote) model to investigate regeneration issues.

In this issue of Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology the authors present a unique range of examples of the regenerative response and the role of stem cells from the amphibian to human. It seems that all roads lead to cells that have the plasticity to become something else, not only in the amphibian but also in the mammal.

Regulation Of Vertebrate Limb Regeneration written by Raymond E. Sicard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985 with Amphibians categories.

The regenerating vertebrate limb is an excellent model for exploring a number of significant questions in developmental biology. Written by leading investigators in the field, this collection provides a comprehensive discussion of the roles played by the major regulators affecting limbregeneration and repair following trauma. Using the amphibian limb as the recognized model system, the contributors explore in detail the contributions made by biopotentials, the skin, the endocrine system, and nerves in regulating such events as dedifferentiation, the proliferation of blastemacells , and pattern formation. The modulating roles of blood cells and the immune system are re-examined, and the exciting studies on the isolation and characterization of neurotropic factors reviewed. The sometimes provocative but always informative and up-to-date discussions provided in thisvolume will be of particular interest to developmental biologists, anatomists, neuroscientists, and cell biologists.

Loss And Restoration Of Regenerative Capacity In Tissues And Organs Of Animals written by Lev Vladimirovich Polezhaev and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with Medical categories.

This well-illustrated monograph is the first summary in English of L.V. Polezhaev's important but lesser known work on the regenerative phenomena in mammalian forms, conducted since World War II. During this period Soviet research underwent a pronounced shift in emphasis from basic biological studies based primarily upon amphibians to more practically oriented problems in mammalian systems. Polezhaev's experimentation underwent a corresponding shift, but the focus on restoration of lost regenerative capacity was retained since his earlier work, which is also reviewed here, on limb regeneration in frogs. Following a theoretical discussion, the monograph centers upon the author's most profound innovations: a successful method for producing bone to heal large skull defects, original research on heart regeneration, and trials in the restoration of limb regeneration following X-irradiation.

Principles Of Regeneration written by Richard J. Goss and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-12 with Science categories.

Principles of Regeneration focuses on the principles, methodologies, and changes involved in the process of regeneration. The book first underscores the nature of the nucleus in Acetabularia, enzyme effects, role of ribonucleic acid in morphogenesis, and functions of the stentor. The text then takes a look at the turnover in hydroids and flatworms and regeneration blastema. Discussions focus on regeneration in hydra, interstitial cells, colonial hydroids, neoblasts, and morphogenetic fields. The publication surveys segmental addition in annelids and molting, metamorphosis, and regeneration in arthropods. The termination of regeneration, importance of nerves, morphogenesis, histogenesis of the regenerate, and role of the nerves are discussed. The manuscript also examines regeneration in fishes, amphibian limb, horns and antlers, and heads and tails. The manuscript is a dependable source of data for students of developmental biology, anatomy, and evolution, as well as teachers and researchers in biology and medicine.
