Since prehistoric times, man has worked to improve the conditions of the territory to make settlements safe and comfortable and to facilitate the continuous search for sustenance. In desert and semi-desert areas the possibility of settling directly depended on the presence of water. The qanat is a hydraulic system whose construction and management techniques have remained almost completely unchanged up to the present day. It allows to transport water through underground channels (also to avoid evaporation) from the source to an area deemed appropriate for creating an oasis or a settlement, in many cases even at a distance of dozens of kilometres.

Le relazioni riguardano tre aree geografiche chiave nel dibattito storiografico: alcune regioni del Medio Oriente, dove è accertata una continuità, in età bizantina ed islamica, della tecnica muraria in opera quadrata; la Penisola iberica, per la quale si raffrontano due posizioni antitetiche tra chi la ritiene sviluppata già in epoca visigota e con un’influenza bizantina e chi la collega invece all’arrivo degli Arabi nell’VIII secolo; la Francia, dove le opere in pietra di cava sono assai rare e di datazione controversa; infine l’Italia, dove il confronto è tra i territori bizantini, in particolare Roma e la Sardegna, e quelli longobardi del Nord Italia dove l’opera quadrata non compare che con il Romanico. Il quadro che ne emerge è assai variegato e ancora aperto, il che richiede ulteriori ricerche sia su casi di studio specifici, come quelli qui presentati delle cripte delle basiliche patriarcali di Aquileia e di Venezia o sul San Michele Arcangelo di Perugia, sia per sintesi regionali in aree geografiche, come le coste mediterranee dell’Africa, non considerate in questa sede.

Numerose sono le tecniche costruttive di età romana. In questo numero ne discutono alcuni specifici aspetti tre contributi nella sezione “casi studio”: relativamente alla città di Argentomagus, alle mura di Populonia, all’opus africanus e alle tecniche a telaio litico in Etruria e Campania. Nella prima parte del volume vengono invece pubblicati gli atti di un seminario che si è tenuto a Padova il 25 ottobre del 2013, dedicato a “Tecniche costruttive e cicli edilizi tra VI e IX secolo”. Il cantiere di restauro è il luogo privilegiato per interventi nei quali le diverse competenze si combinano senza preconcette classificazioni di merito. Una peculiarità che il restauro archeologico presenta è legata alle condizioni dinamiche in cui gli interventi avvengono e alla costante variabilità delle condizioni in cui i manufatti si trovano a vivere, per tempi talvolta lunghi, anche dopo la conclusione dei lavori. È evidente come le difficoltà di conservare manufatti archeologici dipendano in maniera determinante dalle brusche variazioni a seguito dello scavo (con notevoli differenze locali negli esiti che dipendono anche dai metodi e dalle strategie utilizzate), alla variabilità di condizioni in cui i manufatti si troveranno a vivere in seguito e alle possibilità reali di assicurare loro una pratica di manutenzione ordinaria. La situazione rischia di diventare drammatica nel caso di manufatti fortemente smembrati e collocati in aree difficilmente raggiungibili e in quelli che non assicurano una adeguata “immagine” e che, in altri termini, non sono immediatamente e vantaggiosamente “vendibili”.
