An attractive small book telling the story of this ancient Greek Lion, of the tomb it once adorned, and of the ancient city of Knidos from which it came.Carved from the same marble as that used to build the Parthenon, this larger-than-life sculpture was discovered by chance by a young archaeologist walking the cliffs on the coast of western Turkey near the ancient city of Knidos. This concise illustrated book unfolds the story of that discovery and of Knidos in the days of its greatness, and tells how the pioneering archaeologists of 150 years ago excavated and explored its site, discovering many treasures of the ancient world, including the Lion itself.

The monumental lion at the site of Amphipolis in northern Greece is one of the most illustrated sculptures in textbooks of ancient art. It is probably the burial monument of Laomedon, a general and close friend of Alexander the Great. Until the 1930s however, the remains of the lion were fragmentary and little known. This book, by a famous art historian, describes the re-erection of the monument by the French and American Schools in Athens, at a time when the gathering clouds of war gave new meaning to this symbol of Greek military prowess. It presents a full description of the 4th-century B.C. lion, its meaning, and its historical context.

This handsomely illustrated book offers a broad synthesis of Archaic Greek culture. Origins and originality constitute a central theme, for during this period representational and narrative art, monumental sculpture and architecture, epic, lyric, and dramatic poetry, the city-state (polis), tyranny and early democracy, and natural philosophy were all born.
