Sloshing is the low frequency oscillation of the free surface of a liquid in a partially filled container. If not controlled effectively, sloshing may cause excessive dynamic loads which may lead to structural failure (in case of storage containers) or loss of dynamic stability (in case of transport vehicles). Hence, study and control of liquid sloshing is a well justified topic in engineering and science. Container flexibility causes moving boundaries which further complicate the treatment of this already challenging problem. On the other hand, container flexibility may be treated as a design parameter to gain benefit in controlling the free surface oscillations. Although numerous studies have been reported in the literature, attempts to control sloshing have been relatively limited. This book details numerical predictions using standard finite elements software (ANSYS) for the simulation of liquid sloshing in a flexible container.

Sloshing is the low frequency oscillations of the free surface of a liquid in a partially filled container. The dynamic response of structures holding the liquid can be significantly influenced by these oscillations, and their interaction with the sloshing liquid could lead to instabilities. It is critical to predict and to control sloshing in order to maintain safe operations in many engineering applications, such as in-ground storage and marine transport of liquid cargo, aerospace vehicles and earthquake-safe structures. Contributions to the state of knowledge in predicting and controlling sloshing are the main objectives of the proposed research. To this end, a numerical model has been developed to enable reliable predictions of liquid sloshing. The numerical results are compared with experimental results to determine the accuracy of the numerical model. Further, the research addresses the employment of intentionally induced sloshing to control structural oscillations. The novelty of this research is in its use of a flexible container. Results indicate that intentionally introduced flexibility of the container is capable of producing effective control. The practical application of the proposed research is in the early design stages of engineering systems for which liquid sloshing plays a significant part in structural loading.

The motion of a liquid in a flexible container is important for rocket structural dynamics. The purpose of the paper is to study the dynamic response of the liquid, the sloshing frequencies and the stability of the free surface of the liquid in an elastic container. The variational principle for the problem of an incompressible, inviscid fluid in an elastic container is presented by considering the pressure energy of the fluid, the surface energy, and the Lagrangian of the elastic thin shell. The corresponding linearized equations are studied in terms of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The effects of the gravitation, the surface tension, the rigidity of the container, the free surface contact angle and its dynamic variation, on the natural frequencies and the stability of the free surface are discussed. It is found that the flexibility of the container always lowers the natural frequencies and also induces a mean oscillatory motion of the liquid that creates an oscillatory force on the container in the vertical direction. The equilibrium contact angle and its dynamic variation have an important effect on the limit of stability. The motion of a liquid in a circular cylindrical container with a flat flexible bottom is worked out in detail analytically by means of eigenfunctions. Some results are presented graphically. A numerical scheme using finite elements method is developed for an arbitrary container. Methods for improving the solution systematically are indicated. (Author).

This book is an essential guide to nonlinear dynamics and vibration control, detailing both the theory and the practical industrial applications within all aspects of engineering. Demonstrating how to improve efficiency through reducing unwanted vibration, it will aid both students and engineers in practically and safely improving flexible structures through control methods. Increasing demand for light-weight robotic systems and space applications has actuated the design and construction of more flexible structures. These flexible structures, involving numerous dynamic systems, experience unwanted vibrations, impacting accuracy, operating speed, safety and, importantly, efficiency. This book aids engineers in assuaging this issue through vibration control methods, including nonlinear dynamics. It covers topics such as dynamic modeling of nonlinear system, nonlinear oscillators, and modal analyses of multiple-mode system. It also looks at vibration control methods including linear control, nonlinear control, intelligent control, and command smoothers. These control methods are effective and reliable methods to counteract unwanted vibrations. The book is practically minded, using industrial applications throughout, such as bridge cranes, tower cranes, aerial cranes and liquid sloshing. It also discusses cable-suspension structures, light-weight links, and fluid motions which exhibit flexible-structure dynamics. The book will be of interest to students and engineers alike, in the field of mechatronics, mechanical systems and signal processing, nonlinear dynamics, vibration, and control engineering.
