A new edition of the colourful history of Vancouver's Penthouse Nightclub, which celebrates its seventieth anniversary in 2017. The after-hours watering hole for the famous and infamous, the Penthouse was opened in 1947 by brothers Joe, Ross, Mickey, and Jimmy Filippone and soon became the place to see and be seen in Vancouver in the 1950s and '60s. Acts like Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, and Duke Ellington regularly performed on the Penthouse stage, and audiences often included visiting stars such as Frank Sinatra, Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper, and many others. In the 1970s, the Penthouse became infamous for its exotic dancers. Its colourful, lurid history now encompassed vice squads, politicians, judges, and con men, culminating in the murder of Joe Philliponi, known as the "Godfather of Seymour Street," in 1983. However, through decades of evolving social mores and changing cultural styles in a city constantly trying to reinvent itself, the Penthouse somehow survived, a testament to its history and the fortitude of the Filippone family that still owns it. This second edition includes a new chapter on how the original book revived interest in the club and its storied past, and what the future holds in store. There are also newly unearthed historical photographs, and even some traditional Italian recipes from the Filippone matriarch. Rife with nostalgia and just a hint of scandal, Liquor, Lust, and the Law reveals a glamorous and slightly naughty view of historic Vancouver after dark.

Excerpt from Liquor Laws of the United States: Their Spirit and Effect The liquor trafic, in all its bearings upon the moral and social condition of man, has recently been made the subject of methodical enquiries in very many European countries, and a mass of extremely valuable material has already been and is still being gathered there for the purpose of establishing a seien tific basis for future legislation. Similar efforts are at present being made in the United States, and it is to be hoped that fairness, impartiality, and an unselfish regard for the welfare of the Whole country may guide them. This book is offered as an unpretending contribution to these efforts. It claims no merit save that of strictest truthfulness in the representation of the spirit and effect of the liquor laws of this country. The nature of its subject-matter required a separation of the laws enacted by Congress from those enacted by the legislatures of the States. The former laws are reviewed in the present volume; the latter will form the subject of another volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Alcohol and the State: A Discussion of the Problem of Law as Applied to the Liquor Traffic Thomas Carlyle, in a letter written in 1872, after expressing his wish for the "success, complete and speedy," of the English "Permissive Bill," and acknowledging the receipt of certain pamphlets relating to Intemperance, curtly added: "The pamphlets shall be turned to account, though I myself require no argument or evidence further on that disgraceful subject." I can sympathize with the bluff Scotchman's impatience. There are times when this subject is exceedingly wearisome to me, and nothing but a positive sense of duty can hold me to its contemplation. I can easily excuse those who are conscious of having well-grounded opinions, formed upon evidence, from reading what I have to say in this volume. But if there are any who have been heretofore prone to dismiss the whole subject as a vulgar one, I beg them to ponder the rebuke given by Dr. Channing, more than a generation ago, to a similar moral indifference, substituting intemperance for slavery, and inebriate for slave: "There are not a few persons who, from vulgar modes of thinking, can not be interested in this subject. Because the slave is a degraded being, they think slavery a low topic, and wonder how it can excite the attention and sympathy of those who can discuss or feel for anything else. Live At The Cellar written by Marian Jago and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-15 with Music categories.

In the 1950s and ’60s, co-operative jazz clubs opened their doors in Canada in response to new forms of jazz expression emerging after the war and the lack of performance spaces outside major urban centres. Operated by the musicians themselves, these hip new clubs created spaces where jazz musicians practised their art. Live at the Cellar looks at this unique period in the development of jazz in Canada. Centered on Vancouver’s legendary Cellar club, it explores the ways in which these clubs functioned as sites for the performance and exploration of jazz as well as for countercultural expression. Jago combines original research with archival evidence, interviews, and photographs to shine a light on a period of astonishing musical activity that paved the way for Canada’s vibrant jazz scene today.
