Pour l'opérer de son "cancer du lyrisme", Maxime Du Camp et Louis Bouilhet, les deux amis, lui prescrivent un traitement de cheval : écrire un roman "à la Balzac", "terre à terre". Ce sera, contraint et forcé, Madame Bovary. Pas commodes, les temps qui s'annoncent pour ceux-là qui privilégient la phrase et le chant. Désormais le réalisme impose sa loi d'airain, les visions sont renvoyées au désert et les morts priés de ne pas ressusciter. Comme si cette fission entre la terre et le ciel résonnait d'une autre guerre secrète, déclenchée il y a plusieurs siècles autour de cette question de la double nature. Thresholds of Meaning examines contemporary French narrative and explores two related issues: the centrality within recent French fiction and autofiction of the themes of passage, ritual and liminality; and the thematic continuity which links this work with its literary ancestors of the 1960s and 1970s.
