El arribo al Río de la Plata de las obras y las ideas del socialismo romántico, generadas principalmente en Francia, España e Italia desde fines del siglo XVIII, fue juzgado como un fenómeno de importación, una moda cultural efímera y superficial limitada al consumo de las elites letradas. ¿Qué lugar podían tener esas obras producidas en las grandes metrópolis europeas en la periferia del mundo civilizado? ¿Qué podían ofrecerle Jean-Jacques Rousseau a Mariano Moreno o Pierre Leroux a Esteban Echeverría? ¿Qué recepción podía esperarse de las más modernas teorías de la democracia popular por parte de pueblos convulsionados por guerras civiles y caudillismos regionales? Con una erudición notable, Horacio Tarcus compone un relato exhaustivo y original del curso de las ideas socialistas en el espacio rioplatense entre 1837, cuando el término aparece por primera vez en la prensa porteña, y 1852, momento en el que las ideas socialistas se imbrican de un modo singular en el proyecto de la nueva Confederación Argentina. "En suma —sostiene Tarcus—, lo que nos interesa aquí son los usos efectivos que los jóvenes de 1837 hicieron de ciertas nociones y conceptos de Saint-Simon, Leroux, Mazzini o Lamennais para construir su propio lenguaje político y, desde esa construcción sin duda original, constituirse en un colectivo político-intelectual que les permitiera pensar y operar sobre la sociedad rioplatense de su tiempo."
