Forme à la fois immémoriale et moderne, condition d’ordre et ferment de panique, associée à la mémoire et au savoir comme à l’oubli et à la dépense, la liste est partout. On la remarque dans les écrits les plus banals, les plus prosaïques, aussi bien que dans un nombre illimité de productions littéraires. Aussi courante – sinon plus – que le discours narratif construit auquel elle s’oppose, elle est pourtant longtemps restée inaperçue, voire gênante, signe d’aridité ou de factualité terre-à-terre, tache aveugle des études littéraires. Son observation poussée révèle néanmoins une extraordinaire richesse d’expression. Qu’on l’appréhende sous son angle le plus formel ou qu’on la réinsère dans les contextes de son apparition, on constate qu’elle soulève de nombreux questionnements, d’ordre grammatical, typographique ou épistémologique, aussi bien qu’affectif, ludique ou thymique. Elle se présente enfin comme une forme à la pertinence historique considérable pour la compréhension de la littérature de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, et au-delà. Le Clézio, Modiano et Perec en témoignent, arpenteurs d’un temps profondément inscrit dans un mouvement oscillatoire de pléthore et de manque. Une perspective qui signale la liste comme l’un des symptômes scripturaux les plus prégnants de notre époque.

Pourquoi insérer dans une oeuvre littéraire des listes, qu'il s'agisse de héros épiques, de plantes et d'animaux recensés dans le monde naturel, de realia de l'industrie humaine ? Que l'on songe à Rabelais comme à des auteurs aussi divers que Hugo, Borges ou Perec, et l'on constatera que le phénomène, réitéré, est loin d'être marginal. Il est ancien également : ainsi la pratique massive du procédé depuis le Moyen Age mérite-elle qu'on en interroge les origines. Il est ample aussi : les listes d'oeuvres exhibées par des jongleurs en compétition et par des auteurs vantant leur production, les denrées offertes au marché ou nécessaires au ménage qu'inventorient les dits énumératifs en témoignent. Férus de listes, Machaut, Froissart, Deschamps et Villon en déclinent le répertoire, chacun selon sa poétique propre. L'observation de la pratique littéraire de la liste du XIIe au début du XVIe siècle montre qu'elle est associée à une représentation oxymorique du poète, à la fois fier d'une maîtrise qu'il étale et conscient de limites qu'il établit. Celles-ci, en effet, le rapprochent dangereusement du ménestrel, mais aussi du marchand et du bonimenteur, puisque, à leur image, il se livre à un arpentage du monde pour faire commerce de mots dans un étalage de savoir encyclopédique et lexical.

Lists and catalogues have been en vogue in philosophy, cultural, media and literary studies for more than a decade. These explorations of enumerative modes, however, have not yet had the impact on classical scholarship that they deserve. While they routinely take (a limited set of) ancient models as their starting point, there is no comparably comprehensive study that focuses on antiquity; conversely, studies on lists and catalogues in Classics remain largely limited to individual texts, and – with some notable exceptions – offer little in terms of explicit theorising. The present volume is an attempt to close this gap and foster the dialogue between the recent theoretical re-appraisal of enumerative modes and scholarship on ancient cultures. The 16 contributions to the volume juxtapose literary forms of enumeration with an abundance of ancient non-, sub- or para-literary practices of listing and cataloguing. In their different approaches to this vast and heterogenous corpus, they offer a sense of the hermeneutic, epistemic and methodological challenges with which the study of enumeration is faced, and elucidate how pragmatics, materiality, performativity and aesthetics are mediated in lists and catalogues.
