Sprachliche Polyphonie ist ein weit verbreitetes, aber kaum wahrgenommenes Phänomen der »Mehrstimmigkeit« von Äußerungen und Texten. Sie dient der Durchsetzung oder Nuancierung der Standpunkte der Sprecher, die andere Stimmen und Standpunkte in ihre Rede einfügen. Unkontrollierte Polyphonie führt jedoch auch oft zu Missverständnissen. Gerade die multifunktionalen Texte im Gesundheitswesen (Arzt-Patienten-Gespräche, Arztbriefe, Patientenakten, Pflegedokumentation) sind von Polyphonie geprägt. Konkret geht es in diesen Textsorten darum, in wessen Namen und auf welche Art Sprechen, Schreiben und Erzählen geschieht, wer jeweils Verantwortung für das Gesagte übernimmt und wessen Begrifflichkeit verwendet wird. Der bewusste Einsatz polyphonischer Techniken kann zu einer bedeutenden Verbesserung der beruflichen Kommunikation im Gesundheitswesen führen. Linguistic polyphony is the simultaneous presence of different voices and point of views within an utterance or text. Multifunctional texts belonging to health care like health records, referral letters, doctor's letters are highly polyphonic. These text types deal with questions, in which names and manners of speaking, writing, and narrating are performed, who assumes the responsibility for what is uttered, and who's terminology is used. Therefore, controlling and improving these polyphonic structures may lead to an important improvement of the professional communication in the domain of health care.

This book focuses on literary multilingualism and specifically on the challenging condition of writing in Trieste, a key European borderland located at the intersection between the Latin, Germanic and Slav civilisations. By focusing on some of the most representative modern writers operating in the area, such as Italo Svevo, Boris Pahor, Claudio Magris and James Joyce, this work offers a wide-ranging discussion of multilingual practices deriving from the different language choices made by these writers. In this English translation and revision of her acclaimed German-language book, Elke Sturm-Trigonakis expands on Goethe's notion of Weltliteratur (1827) to propose that, owing to globalization, literature is undergoing a profound change in process, content, and linguistic practice. Rather than producing texts for a primarily national readership, modern writers can collate diverse cultural, literary, and linguistic traditions to create new modes of expression that she designates as "hybrid texts." The author introduces an innovative framework to analyse these new forms of expression that is based on comparative cultural studies and its methodology of contextual (systemic and empirical) approaches to the study of literature and culture, including the concepts of the macro-and micro-systems of culture and literature. To illustrate her proposition, Sturm-Trigonakis discusses selected literary texts that exhibit characteristics of linguistic and cultural hybridity, the concept of "in-between," and transculturality and thus are located in a space of a "new world literature." Examples include Gastarbeiterliteratur ("migrant literature") by authors such as Chiellino, Shami, and Atabay. The book is important reading for philologists, linguists, sociologists, and other scholars interested in the cultural and linguistic impact of globalization on literature and culture. The German edition of this volume was originally published as Global playing in der Literatur. Ein Versuch über die Neue Weltliteratur (2007) and it has been translated in collaboration with the author by Athanasia Margoni and Maria Kaisar.

This book proposes that there is no better, no more complex way to access a community, a society, an era and its cultures than through literature. For millennia, literature from a wide variety of geocultural areas has gathered knowledge about life, about survival, and about living together, without either falling into discursive or disciplinary specializations or functioning as a regulatory mechanism for cultural knowledge. Literature is able to offer its readers knowledge through direct participation in the form of step-by-step intellectual and affective experiences. Through this ability, it can reach and affect audiences across great spatial and temporal distances. Literature – what different times and cultures have been able to understand as such in a broad sense – has always been characterized by its transareal and transcultural origins and effects. It is the product of many logics, and it teaches us to think polylogically rather than monologically. Literature is an experiment in living, and living in a state of experimentation. About the author Ottmar Ette has been Chair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 1995. He is Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) (elected in 2014), member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (elected in 2013), and regular member of the Academia Europaea (since 2010).
