Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism The following chapters were first prepared for the college lecture room, and, although since rewritten, they doubtless still betray by a certain dull, didactic manner the place of their origin. While directing the work of college classes, I had often looked about for a book that should give a compendious statement of the essentials of literature and the grounds of critical estimate. Finding no such book, I essayed to make one. Two or three books on the subject - born, I judge, of the same want that produced this one - have indeed appeared since these lectures were first written; but their purpose and method are quite different from those I have had in mind. I have attempted neither to expound a philosophy of criticism nor to elaborate a critical method; but simply to state, as plainly as I might, some qualities that by common consent are to be found in all writing deserving to be called literature, and to lay down some fundamental principles that must be assumed in all sound critical judgments. Excerpt from Literature and Criticism The validity of this little book depends upon the belief that the character of a writer's whole achievement can only be felt and assessed by responding sensitively to the way in which he uses words, and that the capacity to make such a response can be formed or greatly enhanced by a training in literary criticism. D. H. Lawrence says some excellent things about critics and criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Essays in Literary Criticism Very sensible that the only value they are likely to have will arise not from any special literary ability or insight of mine, but solely from the constant de light which I have taken in the writers here reviewed, - who have indeed lived with me and in me, till their world has become a genuine part of my own by no means too rich intellectual life. It is in this way, I cannot help thinking, - by soaking themselves thor oughly with a few great writers, instead of spreading their interests so widely as most literary men do, - that educated men of only ordinary capacities such as mine may do most for the service of literature and the culture of their own minds. It is but few who in any age can really aspire to the position of great cr'itics, - critics such as Coleridge, or Hazlitt, or Lamb, or Lowell, or Emerson. But many, by a more intense concentration of their inferior intel lectual powers, might become both good interpreters and, to a certain extent, just critics of a few great. Excerpt from Elements of Literary Criticism The real value of literature lies in the fact that it is a source of pleasure, and it is most to be desired that we enjoy it unconsciously, as the Scotch enjoy the poems of Robert Burns, without any thought of elements, or qualities, or reasons. But that is possible only where an entire community is possessed of a love for poetry that has grown up among them, with which all have been familiar from earliest childhood. We have very little folk-poetry and have inherited a vast literature which we have not produced. Study and reflection add greatly to our appreciation of this. Excerpt from Elementary Guide to Literary Criticism A glance at the table of contents will clearly reveal the plan. The work is divided into three parts, the first of which treats of fundamental principles. In three chapters the nature of criticism, the relation of the author to his work, and the aesthetic principles underlying literary art are briefly discussed. The facts and principles here presented are designed to give a clearer and deeper insight into the nature and processes of criticism. Excerpt from The Literary Critics: A Study of English Descriptive Criticism S ome things are most readily defined by their contraries, but the ultimate condition of a literature without criticism is one that modern England has happily never known, and we must leave a stranger to speak. These are the words of the Hungarian poet Miklos Gimes, later hanged by the Kadar Government, describing intellectual life in the Socialist countries before the rising of 1956. Excerpt from The Elements of Style: An Introduction to Literary Criticism This book will, I hope, Speak for itself; and, in any case, it is not, I think, likely to be assisted by any prefatory words, whether of recommendation or deprecation. But I take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude to many givers of help, criticism, and encouragement; especially to Mr. Sidney Smith, b.a., late Scholar of Queen's College, Cambridge, whose help was invaluable at various stages of the work; and to Mr. H. Fowler, of Clifton College, who very kindly read the proofs and made suggestions, most of which I have gladly followed. I wish also to thank my publishers, to whom I owe the index, as well as the analytical table of contents in its present form.
