Excerpt from Goethe's Literary Essays Of Goethe Sainte-Beuve held that he was the "king of criticism." Sainte-Beuve was among the most competent of judges on such a point, and Matthew Arnold has endorsed his conclusion. The reason for it is not far to seek. Goethe's gifts as a critic fell within a large whole of knowledge which was his in a degree for which we must look back over two thousand years to Aristotle if we wish to find a rival. He wrote lyrics that are supreme in their kind. His capacity for observation of nature was, as Helmholtz has pointed out, of the first order. Although he hated philosophy, he had, none the less, a fine instinct for great metaphysical conceptions. Spinoza and Kant both made appeal to him, and the appeal was responded to from the depths of his nature. The world has seen no poem like Faust, with the exquisite perfection of the "Dedication" and the lyrical outbursts with which the first part is studded, set in a structure which signifies a profound conception of life as a whole, into which far-reaching reflection has entered. The second part of the drama is as great in this latter regard as is the first part in its occasional exhibitions of the purest lyrical gift. Goethe's work was uneven, as was his life. Excerpt from Literary Studies, Vol. 1: A Collection of Miscellaneous Essays The present final collection of his miscellaneous papers, originally written for, and printed in the American Monthly Magazine, Arcturus, the Church Record, the Democratic and Whig Reviews, Boston Miscellany, Union Magazine, Literary World, and other periodicals, is intended to include such of the writer's papers (chiefly of literary criticism) as have appeared to him worthy of preservation. With the exception of a few comparatively recent articles, they were mostly written and printed 1838-1845, and comprise a little more than one-half of his entire contributions to the press up to the present date. Most of the papers here collected (since the publication of The Analyst, anonymously in 1839, and which was made up of lucubrations written the year and a half previously) have appeared already in the volumes of Literary Studies and Essays upon Authors and Books. Holding the doctrine of Hazlitt, however, to be sound, that a first edition is as good as MSS., as the impressions of all these three miscellanies were limited, and have been long since out of print, and as numerous typographical errors had crept in, as well as mistakes of fact and opinion, it was thought a new and correct edition might be favorably received by the present generation of readers, young students in particular, in college, the lovers of the choice old English literature, and those cultivated general readers to whom these miscellanies are unknown. Was he speaking of himself? Here enter the two eternal schools of literary criticism with their tedious controversy. The early romances and poems of Boccaccio - the Filocolo, the Filostrato, the Teseide, the Ameto, the Amorosa Visione, the Fiammetta, the Ninfale Fiesolano - are all romances, poems, and allegories dealing with love; all point to a loveaffair which reaches the summit of happiness and is then broken by desertion and separation. There was only one love-story, it seems, which interested Boccaccio; what wonder if it was his own? And his own, so far as we have independent knowledge of it, corresponds with the love-story of the romances and poems. The Filostrato, in its dedication to Fiammetta, asserts the identity: 'You are gone suddenly to Samnium, and ... I have sought in the old histories what personage I might choose as messenger of my secret and unhappy love, and have found Troilus, son of Priam, who loved Cressida. His miseries are my history. I have sung them in light rhymes and in my own Tuscan, and so when you read the lamentations of Troilus and his sorrow at the departure of his love, you shall know my tears, my sighs, my agonies; and if I vaunt the beauties and the charms of Cressida, you will know that I dream of yours.'
