"Relembrando-A Velha Literatura de Cordel e a Voz dos Poetas" really contains three important studies on the "cordel": 1) the revision and translation of Curran's PhD dissertation from 1968; 2) the augmentation of one of the chapters of the dissertation, treating Brazil's best known and pioneering poet Leandro Gomes de Barros; 3) the publication of a now historic series of interviews with forty "cordel" poets and publishers in the late 1970s. Curran dedicates much time and energy to this endeavor because he believes the researches were little known in their original form, and more importantly, with the passage of time and the evolution of the "cordel" and Brazil in general, they now remain as historic documents in Brazil's national cultural history.

Além disso, a literatura de Cordel, enquanto prática social e cultural pode proporcionar a construção de conhecimentos na educação, pode ser aplicados no ensino médio e fundamental ou em qualquer área de ensino. Associadas a história cultural e social do Nordeste do Brasil, adquire a vantagem da prática inclusiva, colaborando com o desenvolvimento da habilidade de leitura e escrita, devido as suas características lúdicas, que abrem espaços maiores para uma Educação de Jovens e Adultos. Nesse contexto, esse trabalho busca desenvolver, compreender as construções de novos valores para o ensino e aprendizagem, tendo como base a literatura de cordel, inserir essa literatura, ou seja, uma literatura popular, como recurso pedagógico na Educação de Jovens e Adultos, fortalecendo o entendimento de conteúdos didáticos pelo conhecimento do cotidiano e de mundo do aluno, com a participação, interação e atenção a linguagem oral e escrita, trazendo como proposta a Formação continuada como suporte pedagógico aos professores de língua portuguesa com intuito de sanar deficiência existente na prática pedagógica. Tal proposta traz como intervenção para o problema uma formação continuada com debates e leituras dos referenciais teóricos principalmente no que diz respeito as diversidades de gênero textual.
