The eastern edge of Europe has long been in flux. The nature of the Ukrainian-Russian relationship is both complex and ambiguous. Prompted by the countries’ historical and geographical entanglement, Volodymyr Kravchenko asks what the words Ukraine and Russia really mean. The Ukrainian-Russian Borderland abandons linear historical interpretation and addresses questions of identity and meaning through imperial and geographic contexts. Dominated by imperial powers, Eastern Europe and its boundaries were in a constant state of flux and re-identification during the Russian imperial period. Here, the Little Russian early modern identity discourse both connects and separates modern Russian and Ukrainian identities and gives rise to issues of historical terminology. Mirroring the historical ambiguity is the geographical fluidity of the borders between Ukraine and Russia; Kravchenko situates this issue in the city of Kharkiv and Kharkiv University as both real and imagined markers of the borderland. Putting the centuries-long Ukrainian-Russian relationship into imperial and regional contexts, Kravchenko adds a new perspective to the ongoing discourse about relations between the two nations.

This book, the first of its kind for an English-language audience, introduces a fresh perspective on the Polish literary translation landscape, providing unique insights into the social, political, and ideological underpinnings of Polish translation history. Employing a problem-based approach, the book creates a map of different research directions in the history of literary translation in Poland, highlighting a holistic perspective on the discipline’s development in the region. Kniha ve dvou dílech Dějiny literatury Krnovska (Od středověku po interetnické vztahy v literatuře 20. století a Od národního obrození do současnosti) je prvním pokusem o literárně-historický výzkum té části Slezska a severní Moravy, která dosud nebyla uceleným způsobem zmapována. Autor usiluje o předložení materiálově co nejsolidněji zpracované a interpretačně spolehlivé odborné publikace s tím, že regionální literatura bude stále vznikat v přirozených regionech, budou-li pro to podmínky. Literaturu v regionech lze (např. podle Petera Zajace) chápat jako pulzující literární organizmy a ty je nutné vždy nejprve odhalit ad hoc a teprve poté se pokusit o jejich analýzu. Kniha má charakter kompendia a není určena pouze odborníkům, nýbrž široké veřejnosti.

Nejnovější práce (2021) polské bohemistky Joanny Goszczyńské zachycuje v jednotlivých studiích tvorbu vybraných českých modernistů prvních desetiletí a meziválečného dvacetiletí 20. století: Josefa Čapka, Ladislava Klímy, Jakuba Demla, Richarda Weinera a Vladislava Vančury. Jak napovídá název knihy, autorka se zaměřuje na „temnou tvář české literatury“; reaguje tak na jednostrannou, zdánlivě stereotypní polskou představu, že česká literatura je plná humoru, ztvárňuje všední život a reprezentuje typ „malého českého člověka“ (Hašek, Čapek, Poláček aj.). Ve spektru jejího zájmu se nyní ocitá jiná tvorba, ponořená do hlubokých zákoutí lidské psychiky. Badatelka objevuje a interpretuje díla zkoumající duševní temnotu, často skrývanou pod povrchem; odhaluje propasti zla, šílenství, strachu a posedlosti, ale také patosu a hrdinství. Popisuje hledání pravdy o tíze lidské subjektivity či identity a zkoumá širší souvislosti literatury s krizí kultury, s politickými zvraty a s tragickými prožitky z první světové války. Publikace přináší nejen nezvyklý bohemistův pohled „zvenčí“, ale umožňuje i konfrontaci s literárním děním v Polsku i v Evropě.

Alternatywa pomiędzy postkomunizmem a postmodernizmem to nie tylko dylemat intelektualny czy metodologiczny, ale i doniosły wybór światopoglądowy. The contributors of this volume show in which manner issues on global changes are being answered in selected literary texts from different scientific perspectives. They assume that the German literature of the 20th and 21st century is dominantly influenced by subjects of increasing global complexity such as economics, politics and culture. Here, the subject is analysed under the following aspects: the economic principles of human existence in times of globalisation, the question of national identity constructs in relationship to alterity constructs, cultural diversity and (liberal) multiculturalism, the complexity of history and stories in the tension field of regionality and globality, cultural exchange and cultural conflicts, culture transfer and idea transfer and last but not least, national and transnational remembrance images.
