This book investigates the history of writing as a cultural practice in a variety of contexts and periods. From the sixteenth century on, hundreds of Portuguese New Christians began to flow to Venice and Livorno in Italy, and to Amsterdam and Hamburg in northwest Europe. In those cities and later in London, Bordeaux, and Bayonne as well, Iberian conversos established their own Jewish communities, openly adhering to Judaism. Despite the features these communities shared with other confessional groups in exile, what set them apart was very significant. In contrast to other European confessional communities, whose religious affiliation was uninterrupted, the Western Sephardic Jews came to Judaism after a separation of generations from the religion of their ancestors. This book explores the many agents who promoted the exchange and circulation of cultural and artistic knowledge through diplomatic networks in the early modern period: official or informal ambassadors, artists or travellers. These cross-cultural transfers among the different areas of power in a polycentric monarchy like that of Spain were nourished by ambassadors with multiple loyalties and agendas with complex interests. They exchanged letters or gifts, and collected artifacts, both visual and textual, which promoted hybridization or acculturation processes in the places to which they had been sent.

FRANCISCO DE QUEVEDO Y VILLEGAS (1580-1645), nació en Madrid, de una familia perteneciente a una baja nobleza burocrática que perdía terreno a ojos vista ante el ascenso de la alta aristocracia, la cual copaba todos los puestos de mayor responsabilidad. Ello contribuyó a definir el ángulo de visión política del escritor, aplicado satíricamente, por una parte hacia la naciente burguesía, de la que se sentía completamente ajeno por una cuestión de principios, decididamente hostiles a los mecanismos de creación del capital y a las consecuencias de su acumulación, y por otra parte hacia la alta nobleza cuya ineptitud lo exasperaba hasta el tuétano. He aquí el principio y la aptitud germinativa de su desgarrado conservadurismo a ultranza y de la especie de huida hacia dentro que practicó durante toda su vida. Su existencia en la corte estuvo liada a la variable fortuna de los políticos de alto vuelo a los que sirvió. Los buenos oficios de los que podía hacer gala y su extraordinaria capacidad para la propaganda lo llevaron a ser admitido en los círculos superiores de la sociedad y a implicarlo en asuntos de Estado, envuelto en el brumoso "modus operandi" de la alta diplomacia, lo que le valió ser acusado por el Duque del Infantado, entre otras cosas, de confidente de los franceses, y como consecuencia de ello, el 7 de diciembre de 1639, se le detiene en Madrid, para ser trasladado de inmediato, con gran sigilo y despliegue policial, al Convento de San Marcos, en León. Poca mecha de vida le quedará cuando, en 1643, cansado y enfermo, se le restituya a la corte y "aprenda a andar de nuevo". En noviembre de 1644 se retira definitivamente a la Torre de Juan Abad, la posesión de sus mayores, donde muere en 1645. VIDA DE MARCO BRUTO (1644). Se trata de uno de sus tratados políticos fundamentales. Quevedo recoge la biografía de Marco Bruto incluida en "Vidas paralelas", de Plutarco, la traduce y la glosa, lo que le da pie a forjar deducciones políticas de alcance universal, cierto, aunque con lazos que les permiten agarrarse a la particular situación de la España de su tiempo. En cuanto al estilo, realiza aquí Quevedo un trabajo refinado en el que se perciben todos los recursos de la oratoria más alquitarada.Incluye una biografía del autor.
