Tracing the rise of literary self-consciousness from the Elizabethan period to his own day, Eliot invites us to "start with the supposition that we do not know what poetry is, or what it does or ought to do, or of what use it is; and try to find out, in examining the relation of poetry to criticism, what the use of both of them is."

What Are Poets For written by Gerald L Bruns and has been published by University of Iowa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

Conceptions and practices of poetry change not only from time to time and from place to place but also from poet to poet. This has never been more the case than in recent years. Gerald Bruns’s magisterial What Are Poets For? explores typographical experiments that distribute letters randomly across a printed page, sound tracks made of vocal and buccal noises, and holographic poems that recompose themselves as one travels through their digital space. Bruns surveys one-word poems, found texts, and book-length assemblies of disconnected phrases; he even includes descriptions of poems that no one could possibly write, but which are no less interesting (or no less poetic) for all of that. The purpose of the book is to illuminate this strange poetic landscape, spotlighting and describing such oddities as they appear, anomalies that most contemporary poetry criticism ignores. Naturally this breadth raises numerous philosophical questions that Bruns also addresses—for example, whether poetry should be responsible (semantically, ethically, politically) to anything outside itself, whether it can be reduced to categories, distinctions, and the rule of identity, and whether a particular poem can seem odd or strange when everything is an anomaly. Perhaps our task is simply to learn, like anthropologists, how to inhabit such an anarchic world. The poets taken up for study are among the most important and innovative in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries: John Ashbery, Charles Bernstein, Paul Celan, Kenneth Goldsmith, Lyn Hejinian, Susan Howe, Karen Mac Cormack, Steve McCaffery, John Matthias, J. H. Prynne, and Tom Raworth. What Are Poets For? is nothing less than a lucid, detailed study of some of the most intractable writings in contemporary poetry.

Poetry of life in literature and through literature, and the vast territory in between - as vast as human life itself - where they interact and influence each other, is the nerve of human existence. Whether we are aware of it or not, we are profoundly dissatisfied with the stark reality of life's swift progress onward, and the enigmatic and irretrievable meaning of the past. And so we dramatise our existence, probing deeply for a lyrical and heartfelt yet universally valid sense of our experience. It is in great works of literature that we seek those hidden springs that so move us. It is in honour of this search that this collection focuses on the creative imagination at work in literature and aesthetics.

The Poetry Of Robert Browning written by Stopford A. Brooke and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-17 with categories.

In this book, Stopford A. Brooke offers an informative and incisive commentary on the life's work of distinguished romantic era poet Robert Browning. Brooke was a poet and scholar of 19th century literature, and possessed a unique, in-depth knowledge of the greatest literary figures and poets of the period. This book contains Brooke's comparisons and reflections upon the styles and forms of verse which Browning introduced in his work. The chapters are informed by the intensive studies and experience of the author, who himself wrote poetry for the Irish church. The chapters of this book divide Browning's works into different categories, in turn comparing them against some of the other famous poets of the era, in particular Tennyson and Sordello. Brooke's incisive explanations are supported by frequent quoting of the poet's most poignant verses, offering clear conclusions about their meaning and overall gravity. At times Brooke is critical, noting passages by Browning which he felt were lacking in eloquence or subtlety. A superb book for students of literature or poetry, as well as general readers who appreciate English verse, Stopford A. Brooke's far ranging investigation spans the entirety of Browning's career. His analyses of Browning's treatment of love and other human passions, and the notable presence of women in the poems, together with the imaginative expressions of corporeal things, ranks this study among the finest to have ever been published on the subject.

Great American Prose Poems written by David Lehman and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-18 with Poetry categories.

A prose poem is a poem written in prose rather than verse. But what does that really mean? Is it an indefinable hybrid? An anomaly in the history of poetry? Are the very words "prose poem" an oxymoron? This groundbreaking anthology edited by celebrated poet David Lehman, editor of The Best American Poetry series, traces the form in all its dazzling variety from Poe and Emerson to Auden and Ashbery and on, right up to the present. In his brilliant and lucid introduction, Lehman explains that a prose poem can make use of all the strategies and tactics of poetry, but works in sentences rather than lines. He also summarizes the prose poem's French heritage, its history in the United States, and the salient differences between verse and prose. Arranged chronologically to allow readers to trace the gradual development of this hybrid genre, the poems anthologized here include important works from such masters of American literature as Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, e. e. cummings, Hart Crane, Ernest Hemingway, James Schuyler, Allen Ginsberg, Frank O'Hara, and Elizabeth Bishop. Contemporary mainstays and emerging poets -- Robert Bly, John Ashbery, Charles Simic, Billy Collins, Russell Edson, James Tate, Anne Carson, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Lydia Davis, among them -- are represented with their best work in the field. The prose poem is beginning to enjoy a tremendous upswing in popularity. Readers of this marvelous collection, a must-have for anyone interested in the current state of the art, will learn why.
