By the early middle ages vernacular aristocratic traditions of heroic narration were firmly established in Western and Northern Europe. Although there are regional, linguistic and formal differences, one can observe a number of similarities. Oral literature disseminates a range of themes that are shared by narratives in most parts of the continent. In all the European regions, this tradition of heroic narration came into contact with Christianity, which led to modifications. Similar processes of adaptation and transformation can be traced everywhere in this field of early European vernacular narrative. But with the increasing specialization of academic fields over the last half century, inter-disciplinary dialogue has become increasingly difficult. The volume is a contribution to renew the inter-disciplinary dialogue about common themes, topics and motifs in Nordic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Germanic literature, and about the different methodologies to explore them.

How can we explain the process by which a literary text refers to another text? For the past decade and a half, intertextuality has been a central concern of scholars and readers of Roman poetry. In Intertextuality and the Reading of Roman Poetry, Lowell Edmunds proceeds from such fundamental concepts as "author," "text," and "reader," which he then applies to passages from Vergil, Horace, Ovid, and Catullus. Edmunds combines close readings of poems with analysis of recent theoretical models to argue that allusion has no linguistic or semiotic basis: there is nothing in addition to the alluding words that causes the allusion or the reference to be made. Intertextuality is a matter of reading.

Parody is a most iridescent phenomenon: of ancient Greek origin, parody's very malleability has allowed it to survive and to conquer Western cultures. Changing discourse on parody, its complex relationship with related humorous forms (e.g. travesty, burlesque, satire), its ability to cross genre boundaries, the many parodies handed down by tradition, and its ubiquity in contemporary culture all testify to its multifaceted nature. Diese Allusionen entwerfen für die Erzählfigur des markinischen Jesus vor dem Hintergrund des Triumphzugs eine Doppelrolle: Im Geschick der Gestalt Jesus werden sowohl die Figur des siegreichen Triumphators wie die des im Triumphzug hinzurichtenden königlichen Gefangenen sichtbar. Auf diese Weise entsteht für die Erstleserinnen und -leser des Markusevangeliums das irritierende Konzept eines gekreuzigten Triumphators. Bilder von Hoheit und Niedrigkeit, Sieg und Niederlage, Tod und Leben überlagern sich. Und gerade im scheinbaren Scheitern am Kreuz sollen die Leser einen Triumphator entdecken: eine christologische Herausforderung erster Güte.In seiner Studie identifiziert und untersucht Markus Lau diese markinischen Allusionen auf das Ritual des römischen Triumphzugs unter Rekurs auf ein breites exegetisches Methodenspektrum und interpretiert diese Anspielungen im Blick auf ihre literarische Funktionalität. Das Phänomen der uneindeutigen Anspielung wird dabei literaturwissenschaftlich und wissenschaftstheoretisch reflektiert, um die Plausibilität der Behauptung chiffrierter Referenzen im exegetischen Diskurs nachzuweisen. Eine kulturgeschichtlich ausgerichtete und ritualtheoretisch fundierte Darstellung des römischen Triumphzugs liefert die Basis, um die Allusionen auf den Triumphzug im Markustext zu entdecken, die in der Passionsgeschichte ihren inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt haben, sich aber auch im Rahmen einer erneuten Lektüre des Evangeliums, auf die der Text angesichts seines offenen Endes geradezu angelegt ist, im literarischen "Galiläa" des Markus und auf dem Weg nach "Jerusalem" entdecken lassen. Kritik an einer staatstragenden rituellen Institution des Imperium Romanum zu üben, ist dabei nur eine Funktion der Anspielungen. Die Untersuchungen zeichnen sich durch einen rezeptionsorientierten Forschungsansatz aus und gehen in vielfältiger Hinsicht den Funktionen nach, die die Bezugnahmen auf die Vorsokratiker im jeweils untersuchten Rezeptionskontext erfüllen. Sie fragen: Welche Haltung zum rezipierten Text zeigt sich im rezipierenden Text? Dient er polemischer Abgrenzung oder vielmehr der Bekräftigung eigener Auffassungen im Rekurs auf die Autorität ,der Alten‘? Inwieweit lässt der rezipierende Text das Bemühen um eine unvoreingenommene, sachlich-objektive Darstellung erkennen? Konstruieren die rezipierenden Texte eine Rezeptions- oder Sukzessionslinie und wie ordnen sie sich selbst gegebenenfalls in diese ein? Wird hierbei der hermeneutische Prozess der Rezeption reflektiert oder thematisiert? Mit der Untersuchung dieser und ähnlicher Fragen greift der Band einen Forschungsansatz auf, der mit Bezug auf die Vorsokratiker ganz wesentlich von Georg Wöhrle gefördert wurde; ihm ist der Band als Festschrift gewidmet.
