Sa connaissance est tout aussi indispensable, plus indis pensable meme que ne l'est, pour connaitre pleinement l'histoire d'une seule litterature particuliere; celle des autres litteratures les plus importantes. Elle a en effet developpe les litteratures nationales; c'est elle qui a fourni, pour certains genres, les exemples et les mo deles; c'est aussi sous son influence que se sont formes le langage poetique et la prose elle-meme. Dans ce premier volume, je m'occupe seulement de cette litte rature latine; je fais voir ses developpements et je remonte jusqu'a son origine qui, a la verite, va bien au dela des limites du moyen age. Ce regard en arriere est necessaire pour en comprendre l'historique, et pour etudier, dans leurs phases diverses, les elements de la culture intellectuelle du moyen age qui ont ete d'une grande influence sur les litteratures nationales. La litterature chretienne latine est donc envisagee ici en tant qu'elle nous fait comprendre la litterature du moyen age, et comme une partie de cette litterature. Il va de soi que j'entends parler de la litterature dans son sens strict, c'est - a - dire de la litterature generale qui represente les litteratures nationales posterieures et qui seule a exerce une influence directe sur elles; cette litterature s'adresse au public tout entier. Je n'ai pas cependant exclu la litterature scientifique, mais je l'ai fait entrer en ligue de compte dans la mesure seu lement ou les ouvrages particuliers dont elle s'occupe s'adressaient a l'ensemble de la societe chretienne ou du moins exercaient sur elle quelque influence. J'ai meme fait la part des ouvrages qui ont une importance speciale, mais indirecte, pour la litterature generale. C'est ainsi que, parmi les ouvrages theologiques, ceux qui traitent de l'apologie, de la morale pratique, de l'ascetisme ou de l'histoire entrent entierement dans notre cadre, et, par exception seulement, ceux qui s'occupent de dogmatique speculative ou de polemique. Le choix offrait plus d'une difficulte pour chaque cas particulier, il doit, quand je n'en dirai rien, se justifier de lui - meme en raison du plan que je viens d'indiquer et d'apres la disposition complete de cet ouvrage. Mais il y a plus a l'époque mème Où ils s'adonnent à. Cette littérature, c'est-à-dire dans la deuxième moitié du Vile siècle, nous avons vu qu'ils en prennent la direction et qu'ils comptent déjà dans leurs rangs, au com mencement du siècle suivant, un des écrivains latins les plus considérables de la première période du moyen âge (i). Ce sont ces trois siècles que j'appelle le moy'en-ége. Cette expression a été plus ou moins étendue plus ou moins restreinte; on est fort libre à cet égard; ce qui importe, c'est d'appliquer cette dénomination à une époque qui forme réellement un tout un âge historique, qui ait son commencement son milieu et sa fin. Or, c'est ce que je trouve dans lmtervalle qui sépare l'année 1100 de l'année 1ù00; l'époque antérieure, c'était la conti nuation et la fin dela culture latine.
