Small-town living and faith come alive in the experiences and personalities of life in the tiny dairy farm community of Addicks, Texas. Let your mind wander back to a simpler time as you read poetry inspired by life in a small Methodist church. In Little White Church in the Vale, author Bonnie Watkins recalls her childhood in Addicks and paints a picture of her life in the community. In brilliant details, she describes the stained glass windows in her church, the gardenia bushes outside, and even what it felt like to wear her hair in pincurls on Saturday night in preparation for church on Sunday morning. Black-and-white photographs of small Texas churches tell stories for themselves, bringing another dimension to Watkins words. Whether youre from a big city or a farming community, youll find inspiration and refreshment for your soul in Little White Church in the Vale. Advanced Praise for Little White Church in the Vale: You can almost feel yourself sitting in the pews and watching the congregation of this small town church. PJ Pierce, author of Let me tell you what I've learned": Texas Wisewomen Speak Bonnie has brilliantly captured the charm, beauty, culture and even humor embodied in the rural congregation. You'll be reminded of the simplicity of country living and the transcendence of faith while you feel like youre looking at a Norman Rockwell painting. Will Davis, Jr., Senior Pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship and author of Pray Big and 10 Things Jesus Never Said

This is a true-to-life story of a rebellious young girl who fell in love with a handsome young man, became pregnant and married at age 16, and who wanted only to make a happy life in her own "home sweet home" with her husband and children. Her life turns upside down when her husband becomes seriously abusive to her and her four children and she finds herself a victim of not only him, but of her own willfulness not to be proven wrong and her willingness to sacrifice even physical safety for the dream of a happy home. The pain causes her to seek salvation through God and her Savior Jesus Christ. She also finds the meaning of a mysterious prophetic dream she had when in the midst of her turmoil. The fact that she eventually realizes her dream of a "home sweet home" after many years of pain and sorrow is living testimony to the power of God in human life and the lessons of yielding to a higher power.

San Lorenzo has been a desirable place to live since 1847, when squatters built their cabins on the north side of San Lorenzo Creek, then part of two Mexican ranchos. When landowners could not evict their unwanted guests, the settlement known as Squatterville grew into a town at Four Corners, now the intersection of Hesperian and Lewelling Boulevards. Named San Lorenzo in 1854, over the next 90 years it developed into a close-knit rural community. The great shipyard boom during World War II brought many new families to one of the first self-contained communities of tract homes in the nation, initially developed by David D. Bohannon. This tract, San Lorenzo Village, helped swell the population of this unincorporated area, striving to hold its own between the urban encroachment of San Leandro and Hayward.

Pacific Grove, in the pine forests on the westernmost tip of Monterey Bay, is a magnet for wildlife, tourists, and scientists. Site of the first operational lighthouse in California and the first marine laboratory on the Pacific Coast, its beaches attracted camp meetings in the 19th century. Rows of tent housing that lined the original streets grew into charming neighborhoods of seaside cottages, lit annually by the Feast of Lanterns since 1905. Botanical and biological splendor attracted scientists like Edward Flanders Ricketts, made famous by his friend and one-time Pacific Grove resident John Steinbeck. Each year hundreds of groups use its famous conference center, Asilomar, and each fall tens of thousands of Monarch butterflies make a 2,500-mile journey to hang from the pines in great clusters of wafting wings.
