Excerpt from Live Loads Allowed on Floors of Buildings It is well known that the usual practice in computing stresses due to actual loads varies a great deal with engineers and architects, and that floor beams are sometimes made much stronger than the actual loads require to ptovide for any ex oessive vibration, to prevent deflection of the ceiling, and often to suffice in case of a changed use of the structure. The characteristics of the real live load are discussed and a live load model is presented. This model is of a hierarchic character and describes the variability between defined areas (such as floors in buildings) and the variability within such areas. The load effect is discussed. The live load is separated into : sustained load which is the load normally present; intermittent load which is associated with special situations. With certain simplifying assumptions the statistical characteristics of the load effects caused by the sustained load and by the intermittent load are derived. The effect of correlation is discussed. The different kinds of load information which are needed with regard to different design criteria are discussed. Expressions (in some cases approximate simplifications) are given for the maximum of the sustained load, the maximum of the intermittent load and the maximum of the combined sustained and intermittent load. The duration of the sustained load is treated. A short review of the results of live load surveys is given.

The procedures and techniques developed for measuring and evaluating the live floor loads and fire loads in modern office buildings are summarized. The mai * n features of a computer program for analyzing the data are outlined. This program provides a tabulation of the data, some statistical properties, and selected graphical relationships between the measured loads and the characteristics and usage of the structure.A rationale is developed which is intended to achieve the ultimate goal--easier and less expensive means of surveying live loads in buildings and their combustible content. Two office buildings have been surveyed in a pilot evaluation of the survey techniques--the National Bureau of Standards Administration Building in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and the U. S. Civil Service Commission Building in downtown Washington, D. C.Typical results are presented to illustrate the computer output.(Author).
