Now world famous for football and music, in the nineteenth century Liverpool had a very different reputation. One of the greatest ports in the world, and Europe's western gateway to the Atlantic, Liverpool's emerging wealth and prosperity brought with it a huge influx of crime to the streets, and a new breed of men whose job it was to try to enforce law and order on the increasingly unruly city streets. Much of Liverpool's crime was based around the docks and the sea. Crimps and runners waited to lure the homecoming seamen to dens of immorality where over 2,000 known prostitutes and rot-gut spirits would separate them from their money and their liberty. Tough, hardcore sailors - known as Packet Rats - caused mayhem at sea while in the stinking alleys around Scotland Road the High Rip gang wielded vicious power. Liverpool in the nineteenth century was a place full of stories of assault, robbery and murder as well as poachers, footpads and highwaymen who preyed on the unwary.Against this tide of lawlessness stood men like Constable Casey of the Liverpool police, who disarmed two pistol wielding terrorists, and his police colleagues who not only dealt with the day to day crimes but more unusual crimes such as bombs in the town hall and redcoats rioting in the streets. Liverpool was, without doubt, a challenging and exciting place to live and work in the nineteenth century as the battle for the streets between the criminals and the lawmen raged on.

John Charles Ryle became the undisputed leader and spokesman of the evangelical party within the Church of England in the last half of the nineteenth century, and his works continue to be read by evangelicals of various denominational stripes more than a century after his death. Accordingly, he is often portrayed as "an old soldier" of a heroic cause. While this view of Ryle holds some merit, it often obscures the complexity and dynamism of a most remarkable man. In this intellectual biography, Bennett Wade Rogers analyzes the complicated life and times of a man variously described as traditional, moderate, and even radical during his fifty-eight-year ministry. Ryle began his ministerial career as a rural parish priest; he ended it as a bishop of the second city of the British Empire. In the time between, he became a popular preacher, influential author, effective controversialist, recognized party leader, stalwart church defender, and radical church reformer. Table of Contents: 1. Christian and Clergyman 2. Preacher 3. Pastor 4. Controversialist 5. A National Ministry 6. Bishop 7. Who Was J. C. Ryle?

Ahogy a bombasikerű tévésorozatból megismertük őket, a pengesapkásokból árad a dráma és a baljóslat. Az elegáns, karizmatikus, de mégis velejükig romlott Shelbyk a sapkájuk ellenzőjébe varrt borotvapengével vakítják meg ellenségeiket, miközben véres harcot vívnak egyrészt az ír terroristákkal, másrészt a rendőrséggel, amelyet a körmönfont Churchill belügyminiszter irányít. Ebből a könyvből megismerjük a munkásosztály ritkábban emlegetett küzdelmeit az első világháború előtti brit ipar egyik fellegvárában. A történet azonban 1918 után is folytatódik, amikor néhány pengesapkás létrehozza a hírhedt Birminghambandát. Ez a banda, amelyet a valóban létező Billy Kimber vezetett, gyilkos csatákat vívott Darby Sabini és Alfie Solomon londoni gengszterekkel a háború után felvirágzó britanniai lóversenyeknél lefölözhető védelmi pénzekért. De kik voltak az igazi pengesapkások? Léteztek egyáltalán? Carl Chinn, az ismert társadalomtörténész és műsorvezető most elmeséli a hírhedt bűnözök igaz történetét. Tulajdon dédapja is közéjük tartozott, és nagyapja is illegális bukméker volt a birminghami periférián, akárcsak a Shelbyk. Eredeti források imponáló gazdagságával, ritkán látott képekkel és a pengesapkások leszármazottainak interjúival feltárja a tényeket a mese mögött.

Nineteenth-century Dundee was a tough, unforgiving place. For many of its citizens, it was the survival of the fittest, and to survive they turned to crime. But what was it really like both for the criminals and the law-abiding citizens to live in the streets and closes of Dundee at that time? A Sink of Atrocity reveals the real Dundee of the nineteenth century and the ordinary and extraordinary crimes of the times. As well as the usual domestic violence, fights and petty thefts, the Peter Wallace gang plagued the city while Resurrectionists caused panic and alarm. There were also infamous murders and an astonishing variety of crimes by women, as well as highly unusual crimes such as the theft of a whale at sea. Against this tidal wave of crime stood men like Patrick Mackay and the city's other Messengers-at-Arms, responsible for apprehending criminals before the advent of the police. It was a tough job in a tough city, but the punishments were severe as the authorities fought hard to bring law and order to nineteenth-century Dundee.

Why do true crime stories exert such popular fascination? What do they have to say about the fear of crime in the present moment? This book examines the historical origins and development of true crime and its evolution into distinctive contemporary forms. Embracing a range of non-fiction accounts - true crime book and magazines, law and order television, popular journalism - it traces how they harness and explore current concerns about law and order, crime and punishment and personal vulnerability.
