Liverpool is one of the most famous trading cities in the world. The view of its Pier Head with the Liver Building has become iconic: it has been called the second city of the British Empire and in the 1930s it became the model for Shanghai’s Bund. The city suffered a slow decline in the latter half of the 20th century; industries closed or moved away, postwar architecture was mostly mediocre and the city’s population fell as citizens sought employment further afield. Local people even began to shop elsewhere. As Manchester’s star ascended in the late 1990s, the heart of Liverpool was in danger of becoming economically inconsequential. In 1999, the city council set out a challenge for international developers as part of an ambitious initiative to reverse this trend and encourage people to visit, live in and invest in Liverpool once again. The vision was for a reimagined and extended city centre, one that rethought the vast and under-used space between the principal shopping area and the city’s historic docks. Forty-seven developers expressed an interest and, after a rigorous selection process, the job went to Grosvenor. The result is a 42-acre transformation, a mixed-use, retail-led development that embodies both contemporary urban design thinking and a deep sensitivity to ideas of place, identity and scale. Containing more than 30 individually designed buildings – including department stores, a bus station, apartments, hotels and a five acre park – this complex project was completed within an ambitious timetable to exceptionally high-quality thresholds. Grosvenor, and its 26 firms of architects, have created an entirely new, but uniquely Liverpudlian, urban district. This book tells the story of this Herculean project, its origins, its design and its delivery.

Private Sector Led Urban Development Projects written by Erwin Heurkens and has been published by TU Delft this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-04 with Architecture categories.

Central to 'Private Sector-led Urban Development Projects' lays the concept of private sector-led urban development projects. Such projects involve project developers taking a leading role and local authorities adopting a facilitating role, in managing the development of an urban area, based on a clear public-private role division. Such a development strategy is quite common in Anglo-Saxon urban development practices, but is less known in Continental European practices.Nonetheless, since the beginning of the millennium such a development strategy also occurred in the Netherlands in the form of 'concessions'. However, remarkably little empirical knowledge is available about how public and private actors collaborate on and manage private sector-led urban development projects. Moreover, it remains unclear what the effects of such projects are. This dissertation provides an understanding of the various characteristics of private sector-led urban development projects by conducting empirical case study research in the institutional contexts of the Netherlands and the UK. The book provides an answer to the following question:What can we learn from private sector-led urban development projects in the Netherlands and UK in terms of the collaborative and managerial roles of public and private actors, and the effects of their (inter)actions?

Everyday Streets written by Agustina Martire and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-25 with Architecture categories.

Everyday streets are both the most used and most undervalued of cities’ public spaces. They are places of social aggregation, bringing together those belonging to different classes, genders, ages, ethnicities and nationalities. They comprise not just the familiar outdoor spaces that we use to move and interact but also urban blocks, interiors, depths and hinterlands, which are integral to their nature and contribute to their vitality. Everyday streets are physically and socially shaped by the lives of the people and things that inhabit them through a reciprocal dance with multiple overlapping temporalities. The primary focus of this book is an inclusive approach to understanding and designing everyday streets. It offers an analysis of many aspects of everyday streets from cities around the globe. From the regular rectilinear urban blocks of Montreal to the military-regulated narrow alleyways of Naples, and from the resilient market streets of London to the crammed commercial streets of Chennai, the streets in this book were all conceived with a certain level of control. Everyday Streets is a palimpsest of methods, perspectives and recommendations that together provide a solid understanding of everyday streets, their degree of inclusiveness, and to what extent they could be more inclusive.

Land Ownership And Land Use Development written by Erwin Hepperle and has been published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-10 with City planning categories.

Across Europe, land is constantly the subject of enormous and widely varied pressures. The land we have is shrinking in area due to numerous reasons, including those that are directly related to climate change and migration. In fact all disciplines that have responsibilities for the husbandry use, management, and administration of the land are forced to address the problems of how to plan and how to utilise this increasingly valuable resource. The papers contained within this book emerge from two symposia held in 2014 and 2015, which now have been arranged along four general themes reflecting the multi-disciplinary nature of the disciplines concerned with land. The first part is dedicated to the interpretation of key terms in their context and the dissimilar conceptual approaches in the governance of different states. It is followed by papers that identify the process of decision-taking: how to organize and co-operate. One large section addresses the identification of land pattern changes and the reason for it. The papers in the final cluster deal with the general theme of strategies and measures used to steer future evolution in land policies. The publication addresses various needs that have to be balanced: the tasks of living space in the face of societal and demographic changes, infrastructure supply, challenges of an increasingly urbanised region, food production, ‘green energy’, natural hazards, habitats and cultural landscapes protection.

Pelli Clarke Pelli, founded in 1977 by Cesar Pelli, is an architectural office of worldwide renown. They are known in particular for their elegant and technically advanced tower designs. These are usually characterized by taut, seamless envelopes without exposed profiles – their visual structure is achieved by subtly staggered forms or variations in the color or materiality of the façade glazing. The unusual offi ce structure of Pelli Clarke Pelli informs the work: an almost craft-like perception of architectural design and a close personal relation with the client are typical for their approach. A model-making workshop within the offi ce helps to fi nd the appropriate form. Many projects also fulfi l urbanistic roles: They create urban spaces or act as iconic landmarks within the city fabric. The publication encompasses a selection of works from the past eight years. Amongst the documented projects are Bloomberg Tower in New York, Minneapolis Central Library, Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco, National Museum of Art in Osaka, Xiao Bai Lo Tower in Tianjin and Torre Cajasol in Sevilla.

Urban Regeneration And Neoliberalism written by Clare Kinsella and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-29 with Political Science categories.

This book explores the concept of ‘home’ in Liverpool over phases of ‘regeneration’ following the Second World War. Using qualitative research in the oral history tradition, it explores what the author conceptualises as ‘forward-facing’ regeneration in the period up to the 1980s, and neoliberal regeneration interventions that ‘prioritise the past’ from the 1980s to the present. The author examines how the shift towards city centre-focused redevelopment and ‘event-led’ initiatives has implications for the way residents make sense of their conceptualisations of ‘home’, and demonstrates how the shift in regeneration focus, discourse, and practice, away from Liverpool’s neighbourhood districts and towards the city centre, has produced changes in the ways that residents identify with neighbourhoods and the city centre, with prominence being given to the latter. Employing Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and field as mechanisms for understanding different senses of home and shifts from localised views to globalised views, this book will appeal to those with interests in urban sociology, regeneration, geography, sociology, home cultures, and cities.

Shopping Malls And Public Space In Modern China written by Nicholas Jewell and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Architecture categories.

China’s rise as an economic superpower has been inescapable. Statistical hyperbole has been accompanied by a plethora of highly publicized architectural forms that brand the regeneration of its increasingly globalized urban centres. Despite the sizeable body of literature that has accompanied China’s modernization, the essence and trajectory of its contemporary cityscape remains difficult to grasp. This volume addresses a less explored aspect of China’s urban rejuvenation - the prominence of the shopping mall as a keystone of its public spaces. Here, the presence of the built form most representative of Western capitalism’s excess is one that makes explicit the tensions between China’s Communist state and its ascent within the ’free’ market. This book examines how these interrelationships are manifested in the culturally hybrid built form of the shopping mall and its role in contesting the ’public’ space of the modern Chinese city. By viewing these interrelationships as collisions of global and local narratives, a more nuanced understanding of the shopping mall typology is explored. Much architectural criticism has failed to address the levels of meaning implicit within the shopping mall, yet it is a building type whose public popularity has guaranteed its endurance. Consequently, if architecture is to remain a relevant social art, a more holistic understanding of this phenomenon will be indispensable to the process of adapting to globalizing forces. This examination of Chinese shopping malls offers a timely and relevant case study of what is happening in all our cities today.
