Liverpool is rapidly emerging as a premier European city of culture and history, and in 2004 it was declared a World Heritage Site—the “supreme example of a commercial port at the time of Britain’s greatest global influence”—by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. Liverpool: Maritime Mercantile City is the document prepared by the Liverpool World Heritage Site Steering Committee to support the bid for World Heritage status. With a thorough history of the area and its stunning buildings, complemented by a profusion of historic and contemporary illustrations in full color, the book is a compelling record of Liverpool’s history and its vital role in Britain’s economy.

LIVERPOOL¿S waterfront is an exciting, breathtaking vista and one of the most memorable in the world, easily compared with Sydney, New York or Shanghai, its sister city in China. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries this remarkable waterfront was the lifeblood of the city and defined its visual identity on a global scale. It is renowned amongst residents, sailors and tourists alike for the imposing architectural trinity of the elegant `Three Graces¿ buildings that hold court over the Pier Head and the river Mersey. Now this stunning waterfront is even more impressive in the 21st century as it takes on the mantle of a modern metropolis ¿ while also revelling in its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.Within the waterfront¿s World Heritage boundary can also be found Jesse Hartley¿s wonderful Grade I listed Albert Dock. The river Mersey ¿ one of the world¿s great waterways ¿ has been a magnet for people for centuries; the swirling occasionally unruly tides reflecting Liverpool¿s own historical and contemporary ebbs and flows; and in the past was pivotal to the emergence of the city as probably the most important seaport in the world. This stunning and eclectic collection of images paints a striking and panoramic kaleidoscope of the waterfront and all its evocative, atmospheric and often erratic moods and shapes from dawn to dusk and throughout the night. The pages of photographs are interspersed with a number of essays that reflect the feelings and emotions that the waterfront.

Cultural Mega Events written by Zachary M. Jones and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-05 with Architecture categories.

Mega-events have long been used by cities as a strategy to secure global recognition and attract future economic investment. However, while cultural mega-events like the European Capital of Culture have become increasingly popular, cities have begun questioning the traditional model of other events such as the Olympic Games with many candidate cities cancelling bids in recent years. This approach to planning and developing cities through mega-events introduces a broad range of physical effects and nuanced institutional changes for cities, particularly for the more sensitive heritage areas of cities. This book explores these issues by first examining the dynamics of cities’ attempts to reduce overall costs and increase the sustainability of these large events by further embedding them within the existing fabric of the city and second by studying in depth the impact on the heritage of host cities. This book investigates three World Heritage Cities: Genoa, Liverpool and Istanbul, each of which have hosted the European Capital of Culture and introduced a variety of opportunities and risks for their heritage. The book highlights the potential benefits and challenges of integrating event and heritage planning to provide lessons that can help future historic cities and heritage decision makers better prepare for such events.

World Heritage: Concepts, Management and Conservation presents an insight into discussions and debates surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the properties on it. Since its creation 50 years ago, the World Heritage Convention has been lauded as one of the most successful international expressions of cooperation, whilst at the same time being widely criticised as producing an overly commercialised and globalised sense of heritage. Offering an in-depth discussion of both sides of the debate, this book explores these issues by discussing the following topics: • How the World Heritage Convention was conceived and how it is operationalised; • How the World Heritage concept is currently being used and misused; • The benefits of inscription – perceived and actual existential threats faced by World Heritage Site managers including climate change, urban development, overtourism, military action and natural disaster; • The future of World Heritage as an instrument for conservation and economic development. Case studies from a global range of World Heritage Sites are included throughout, to showcase some of the successes and also missuses of World Heritage status. This book will be of pivotal interest to students and scholars in the fields of tourism, heritage, archaeology, natural resource management and development studies.
