Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 15 of 16 Away with these childish wranglings with the unalter able past! Facts regarding the queenly sisters, both of Tudor and of Stuart, remain extant, defying all attempts to stifle them, guarded in manuscript among our archives, or those of France. Incidents may be told maliciously or apologetically; in both cases the author's comment may stand in absurd contradiction to quoted authority, but these deviations from the majestic simplicity of recti tude will have the consequence of disgusting the public, and will ever render a narrative unreadable. Can a more absurd spectacle exist than when the comments of writers appear at Open war with the facts they have just cited from documents? Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 16 of 16 The victory of Oudenarde obliged the queen to make her usual etate-procession to St. Paul's, for the purpose of returning thanks for the success of her arms, which thanksgiving was appointed for August 19, 1708. The duchess of Marlborough, who deemed herself the heroine of the day, was remarkably full of bustle and business on such occasions. Among other important affairs connected with her office as mistress of the robes, she arranged the queen's jewels in the mode she chose them to be worn. Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 2: Compiled From Official Records and Other Authentic Documents, Private as Well as Public No one would have imagined that Isabella of Angouleme was destined to become the future queen of England when king John ascended the throne, for she was then not only the engaged wife of another, but, according to the custom of the times, had been actually consigned to her betrothed for the purpose of education. Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 12 of 16 An interval of repose, and even of domestic comfort, succeeded the birth of la Consolatrice, as James II. fondly called the child of his adversity. Mary Beatrice, though deprived of the pomp and power of royalty, and a queen only in name, was assuredly much happier in her shadowy court at St. Germains than she had been as a childless mother and neglected wife amidst the joyless splendor of Whitehall. She was now blessed with two of the loveliest and most promising children in the world, and possessed of the undivided affection of a husband, who was only the dearer to her for his misfortunes. Like the faithful ivy, she appeared to cling more fondly to the tempest-scathed oak in its leafless ruins than when in its majestic prime. Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 9 of 16 British islands. Her dower, moreover, completed the geo graphical wholeness of her husband's fortunate inheritance; for the Orkney and Shetland islands, which had in the preceding century been pawned by Denmark to Scotland, were yielded ultimately to the Scottish king on condition of his marrying this princess. The sovereignty of these barren islands may appear, at the present day, a trifling addition to the majesty Of the British crown; yet they are links Of the great insular empire of the sea, and their reten tion by any rival maritime power must have caused, at some time or other, a considerable waste of blood and treasure. Anne of Denmark was the first queen-consort of Great Britai(R) title which has been borne by the wives of our sovereigns from the commencement of the seven teenth century to the present era. Before, however, she attained this dignity, she had presided fourteen years over the court Of Scotland, as queen-consort of James VI. Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 11 of 16 James was in his twenty-first year when he commenced his second campaign as a lieutenant-general; he was the youngest officer of that rank in the French service, and the most distinguished. His great talent was as an engineer. At the siege of Mousson, where he was at work with his company in the ditch of the envelope, under the great tower, a storm blew away their blinds, and left them ex posed to the view of those on the ramparts. Yet all of us, says he, were so busily employed picking our way, the ditch being full of dirt and water, that not one single man observed that the blind was ruined, and we conse quently in open view, till we were gotten half our way, and then one of our company proposed that we should return; to which I well remember I would not consent, urging that since we were got so far onward, the danger was equal. So we continued going on, but in all the way we were thus exposed not one shot was fired at us, at which we were much surprised. After the town surrendered, the governor informed us, 'that being himself on the wall, and knowing me by my star, he forbade his men to fire upon the company.' Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 1 of 16: Compiled From Official Records and Other Authentic Documents, Private as Well as Public Few historical works have ever acquired a popularity so immediate and continuous as that of the Lives of the Queens of England. Published originally in twelve volumes (london, 1840 it ran quickly through several editions, of one of which alone, that of 1864-5, in six volumes, more than eleven thousand copies were sold. The first American reprint appeared in Philadelphia almost simultaneously with the original publication in England. Subsequent issues have conformed to the text of the revised editions, published in 1852, 1854, and subsequently, in eight volumes, and illustrated with por traits of all the queens. On both sides of the Atlantic the book has still a steady sale, and copies in public libra ries are in frequent request. The attractiveness of the subject, as well as of the treatment, has always commended it to a far wider class of readers than those who take a special interest in historical studies; while the fulness of its details and the labor expended in its preparation have ensured it against rivalry in the field which it was the first to occupy. The work destined to attain to this fortunate position was the composition of two maiden ladies, daughters of Thomas Strickland, of Reydon Hall, near Southwold, Suf folk, and of his second wife, Elizabeth Homer. The elder sister, born in 1794, and named after her mother, had an equal share with the younger in the execution of the work; but her invincible aversion to publicity led her.
