Issues of gender and sexuality are intrinsic to people’s experience: their sense of identity, their lives and the loving relationships that shape and sustain them. The life and mission of the Church of England – and of the worldwide Anglican Communion – are affected by the deep, and sometimes painful, disagreements about these matters, divisions brought into sharper focus because of society’s changing perspectives and practices, especially in relation to LGTBI+ people. Living in Love and Faith sets out to inspire people to think more deeply both about what it means to be human, and to live in love and faith with one another. It tackles the tough questions and the divisions among Christians about what it means to be holy in a society in which understandings and practices of gender, sexuality and marriage continue to change. Commissioned and led by the Bishops of the Church of England, the Living in Love and Faith project has involved many people across the Church and beyond, bringing together a great diversity and depth of expertise, conviction and experience to explore these matters by studying what the Bible, theology, history and the social and biological sciences have to say. After a Foreword from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the book opens with an invitation from the Bishops of the Church of England to embark on a learning journey in five parts: Part One sets current questions about human identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage in the context of God’s gift of life. Part Two takes a careful and dispassionate look at what is happening in the world with regard to identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. Part Three explores current Christian thinking and discussions about human identity, sexuality, and marriage. In the light of the good news of Jesus Christ, how do Christians understand and respond to the trends observed in Part Two? Part Four considers what it means for us as individuals and as a church to be Christ-like when it comes to matters of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. Part Five invites the reader into a conversation between some of the people who have been involved in writing this book who, having engaged with and written Parts One to Four, nevertheless come to different conclusions. Amid the biblical, theological, historical and scientific exploration, each part includes Encounters with real, contemporary disciples of Christ whose stories raise questions which ask us to discern where God is active in human lives. The book ends with an appeal from the Bishops to join them in a period of discernment and decision-making following the publication of Living in Love and Faith. The Living in Love and Faith book is accompanied by a range of free digital resources including films, podcasts and an online library, together with Living in Love and Faith: The Course, a 5-session course which is designed to help local groups engage with the resources, also published by Church House Publishing.

We are delighted to introduce Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium On Religious Life (ISRL 2020). This conference has brought academicians, researchers, developers and practitioners around the world. In collaboration with Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS) and Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Agency for Research, Development and Training of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) convened bi-annual symposium with the following main theme: “Religious Life, Ethics and Human Dignity in the Disruptive Era”. The 3rd ISRL highlighted the role of religion and ethics in the disruptive era that erode human values, civility, and dignity. In the processes of development and technological revolution, religion can play an essential role in providing spiritual, moral, and ethical guidance. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, religion is perceived in two ways: on the one hand, some faith communities have been willfully negligent and become ‘super-spreaders’ of the dangerous virus by defying stay-at-home orders. Yet, on the other hand, religion has also galvanized its adherents to support economically vulnerable and marginalized communities affected by the lockdown and social restrictions. Likewise, in democratization, religion gives society the necessary dynamic thrust to maintain its vibrancy, resiliency, and sustainability. This Symposium is therefore expected to delve into the complexity of how religion, religious values and faith communities confront the contemporary challenges to uphold ethics and human dignity. We strongly believe that ISRL conference provides a good forum for all academicians, researcher, developers and practitioners to discuss all religious Life, ethics and human dignity. We also expect that the future ISRL conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.

In February 2017, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York proposed the commissioning of 'a large‑scale teaching document around the subject of human sexuality'. After three years of work by a multidisciplinary team, a suite of resources was published in November 2020 as Living in Love and Faith. In commending the resources, the Bishops of the Church of England invited people across the Church to use them to listen and learn together with others in faith.Listening with Love and Faith aims to gather what has emerged from this churchwide engagement regarding questions of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. It seeks to offer a faithful, accurate and evidenced account of the responses to the LLF questionnaire, the focus groups and the creative responses submitted by participants in a variety of forms. The publication of Listening with Love and Faith marks the beginning of the final stage of the LLF journey: discernment leading to decisionmaking about a way forward. By means of this report, the views, prayers and stories of those who have participated in the LLF process will accompany the bishops as they attend to the Scriptures and seek to discern what the Spirit is saying to the Church of England at this time. For more information, including a more detailed version of this report, visit www.churchofengland.org/LLF.

The Testament of Levi, like the other Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, is considered to be a Jewish work that was added to by Christians in the Christian era. It is unclear when it comes from, however, fragments of the Testaments of Joseph and Levi have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls in Aramaic, dating to between 135 and 37 BC, implying the rest of the Twelve were compiled at the same time. The Testament of Levi also refers to the Book of Enoch, an Aramaic Second Temple era work that was not included in the Septuagint, which implies it was written around the same time as the Books of Daniel and Enoch, which would date it to anywhere between 300 and 100 BC. The surviving copies of the Testament of Levi contain multiple layers of prophecy that was once accepted as being authentic pre-Christian predictions of the coming of Jesus Christ. This view shifted in Western Europe during the Protestant reformation, and the text was assumed to be a Christian era work, and generally dismissed as a forgery. This view shifted by the 1900s, as an Semitic layer of text was found within it that indicated it was originally a pre-Christian work that was later Christianized, and it was then assumed to be a Pharisee work that the Christians had added all the prophecies to. Since the discovery of fragments of the testament have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, dating to between 135 and 37 BC, and written in Aramaic, the Pharisee theory has been discredited. The Dead Sea Scrolls fragments have also shown that some of the prophecies were present in the Aramaic texts by 37 BC, meaning that the Christians had simply added to the prophecies to indicate they were about Jesus. The original work appears to be an anti-Levitical text, which dismissed the Levitical priesthood, and pointed to an alternative priesthood. As this was not a Samaritan text, it was likely a text written by the Tobian Jews mentioned in 2nd Maccabees, that lived in Seleucid controlled regions.

Our articles this quarter examine some important practices that were common in those early days: healing miracles, encounters with magic and sorcery, and, of course, compassionate ministry. We'll also look at Paul's conversion and Peter's confidence after Pentecost, as well as the ancient church at Syrian Antioch, the main missionary church of the first century.
