The Arab–Islamic city has been always a glamorous urban dream in human cultural memory. This is manifested in Cairo, the world’s largest medieval urban system where traditional lifestyles are still implemented. Nevertheless, despite the extensive efforts to preserve Historic Cairo, it is sadly vulnerable. Ahmed Sedky investigates the reasons behind this condition, exploring and comparing regional and international case studies. Questions such as how and what to conserve are raised and elaborated through the perspectives of different stakeholders. A resulting evaluative framework is accumulated that underpins the criteria for assessing area conservation in the Arab–Islamic context and that can be used to delineate the causes responsible for the present condition of Historic Cairo.

This book reveals how the Aga Khan Development Network and its Historic Cities Programme transformed an area of Cairo's urban blight into a dynamic public space. Once a city of verdant gardens and parks, Cairo in the 1980s was severely overcrowded, economically struggling, and many of its inhabitants lived in unsanitary conditions. Historic Cairo, a World Heritage Site centered on the original Fatimid settlement of Cairo, has presented a challenge to conservationists and urban planners over the years as they have sought to protect the city's heritage while it remains a living city. Understanding how the process of decline could be reversed by restoring monuments and building a new park, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) set about revitalizing the Darb al Ahmar area and creating Al Azhar Park. This book features numerous scholarly contributors and authors who participated in the program, and shows how the conservation effort paid off in countless ways.

Excerpt from Cairo: Sketches of Its History, Monuments, and Social Life For such as wish to prepare their minds to appreciate the historical bearing of the monuments and daily scenes of the Cairo they are about to visit, the present volume may serve as an introduction. It does not pretend to be exhaustive, but merely attempts to give a general view of the historical, archaeological, and social aspects of mediaeval and modern Cairo. Much of it is based upon personal Observation, and the rest is drawn from authoritative sources. The main subject is Cairo and its Mohammedan inhabitants, past and present but in treating of the city, it was impossible to overlook the country-folk who flock into its streets, bearing the produce of the fields; and in describ ing the exquisite achievements of Saracenic Art, it would have been ungracious to ignore the superb artistic work of the Copts, who taught the Arabs so much, and received so little attention from modern writers until Mr. Butler wrote his admirable work on their churches. Nor was it possible to shut our eyes to the huge monuments of the earliest civilisation in the world, which fringe the horizon as one looks forth from the ramparts of Saladin's Citadel, and remind us how the years of mediaeval Cairo are but as days in the sight of the Pyramids. Saladin becomes almost a contemporary here when we look over his battlements at the mighty tomb of Cheops. But the desolation of Memphis and the vestiges of the Christian period are only incidental to my purpose. The signal success of the English administration of Egypt during the last fifteen years has called for a supplementary chapter, in which the admirable results of British influence, exerted by Lord Cromer and an able executive staff, are set forth for the information of those who do not make a systematic study of the parliamentary blue-books. Cairo written by Nezar AlSayyad and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-13 with Architecture categories.

From its earliest days as a royal settlement fronting the pyramids of Giza to its current manifestation as the largest metropolis in Africa, Cairo has forever captured the urban pulse of the Middle East. In Cairo: Histories of a City, Nezar AlSayyad narrates the many Cairos that have existed throughout time, offering a panoramic view of the cityÕs history unmatched in temporal and geographic scope, through an in-depth examination of its architecture and urban form. In twelve vignettes, accompanied by drawings, photographs, and maps, AlSayyad details the shifts in CairoÕs built environment through stories of important figures who marked the cityscape with their personal ambitions and their political ideologies. The city is visually reconstructed and brought to life not only as a physical fabric but also as a social and political orderÑa city built within, upon, and over, resulting in a present-day richly layered urban environment. Each chapter attempts to capture a defining moment in the life trajectory of a city loved for all of its evocations and contradictions. Throughout, AlSayyad illuminates not only the spaces that make up Cairo but also the figures that shaped them, including its chroniclers, from Herodotus to Mahfouz, who recorded the deeds of great and ordinary Cairenes alike. He pays particular attention to how the imperatives of Egypt's various rulers and regimesÑfrom the pharaohs to Sadat and beyondÑhave inscribed themselves in the city that residents navigate today.
