Her aim was to further her career in nursing to support her family... Meanwhile, she leaves her daughter Margaret to be brought up by her parents. However, Margaret was left on the island to face many dilemmas of her own, after her mother Esther left for England. Eight years later Esther sent for her daughter Margaret after getting remarried. Esther and Margaret suddenly realise Living in the Unknown (England) was not all they dreamt of whilst living on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. This story is inspired by true events focusing on the Windrush Generation from the racial dilemmas and psychological mishaps. Brent Wilson fled the rat race of the Developed World and moved to Nevis, one of the Caribbean's tiniest and least-developed islands. He took just a few, simple possessions: a suitcase filled with underwear, a copy of Robinson Crusoe, and some string. Brent discovered that Caribbean life is not all sun, rum and sand. His arrival coincided with Hurricane Hugo, and he encountered tarantulas in his toilet and scorpions in his bed. He could barely understand the islanders, and during his first years on Nevis grew close to a nineteen-year-old woman dead over three hundred years. But Brent stuck it out while watching other hopefuls come and go, beaten by the realities of tropical life. Eventually he even managed to find that most unlikely of things--a real, live woman prepared to put up with him. This is an account of Brent's years on Nevis, and how he finally had to choose between Jacqui, the woman he had found, and Nevis, the island he had come to love.

Black & White Edition -- In the 1670s, a Dutch settler named Claudius van Beverhoudt arrived on St. Thomas, Danish West Indies. He married a woman named Elizabeth deWindt and made St. Thomas his home. Arnold van Beverhoudt, Jr. is a direct 8th generation descendant of Claudius and Elizabeth. His paternal grandparents, Ernest and Elisa, were living on St. Thomas in 1917 when the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands. They eventually moved to Venezuela, but Arnold's father remained on St. Thomas, where he became an auto repairman and raised his family. This book presents - in words and photos - Arnold's memories of life growing up and eventually meeting his "Island Girl" Helena on the tiny Caribbean island that its residents affectionately call "the Rock." It's a story that's been over 340 years in the making.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off your bowlines, sail away from your safe harbor and catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover. Mark TwainI wanted to see the heart and soul of the Caribbean in a fabulous six-month island-hopping adventure. I explored over forty islands from the Bahamas to the Grenadines and, in this book, provide the reader with some history, humor, good stories, and a little philosophizing about the trip. I try to transport my readers into another world they may or may not ever occupy themselves; take them on a road trip they may only dream about. I tried to keep my book positive, adventuresome, humorous, and fun to read.I have been an explorer and a wanderer all of my life. I have always wanted to live every day to its fullest. The harsh reality of life is that we do not make it out alive. I made many new friends on this trip thru the Caribbean who I still keep in touch with to this day. It is so easy to socialize when your days revolve around beaches and sunsets.Travels, even if along the same path, are all different and they all have their own personalities. What you have to accept in order to enjoy traveling to the max is that you do not take a trip--a trip takes you. I have always been very good at understanding and accepting this. It's also important to consider the lifespan of your journey. This seems to be variable and unpredictable. Who has not known a journey to be over and dead before the traveler returns? The reverse is also true; many a trip continues long after the journey has ended. My six-month Caribbean trip has always stayed with me--you will know why by the final page of this book.I backpacked on the trip for flexibility, I even beach camped a few times. My transportation between islands was mostly by ferry and my transportation on the islands was mostly scooter or good old-fashioned shoe leather. I stayed predominately at B&Bs when I could although some island locations mandated different lodging requirements like Mustique and the Canouan Islands. This was one of the best trips of the many I have taken in my life. I was a different and a much better person at the conclusion of the trip, and I learned a lot about myself, the Caribbean and the Caribbean people.I hope you enjoy reading about my island-hopping adventure as much as I enjoyed living it.
