Rough Living: Surviving Violence and Homelessness reveals the ways in which intense chains of disadvantage, incorporating homelessness, are triggered by very early experiences of violence. Drawing on biographic interviews with six men and six women, the book bears witness not only to horrendous repeated experiences of physical and sexual violence, but discusses what may be understood as related multi-dimensional vulnerability in areas such as physical and mental health, education, employment and social connectedness. A picture of the long-term cycles of violent victimisation and homelessness, and their compounding traumatising effects, are made clear and the importance of trauma-informed service delivery is outlined as a key way forward.

Melbourne Updated Paperback Edition written by Sophie Cunningham and has been published by NewSouth Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-16 with Travel categories.

Melbourne's a city you get to know from the inside out – you have to walk it to love it. My favourite time to do this is at night. That's when you capture glimpses of people – eating, laughing, talking, arguing, watching TV and reading – through half-open terrace house doors and windows … It is a city of inside places and conversation. Of intimacy. Melbourne begins on Black Saturday, the day that bushfires tore through the outskirts of Melbourne, destroying the townships of Marysville and Kinglake, shattering thousands of lives. Sophie Cunningham writes about what happened over the year that followed. Sit through a heatwave, visit the drains underneath the city, participate in a letterpress workshop, wander beside the Yarra, cycle alongside tram tracks and cheer at the footy. Live through the drought before the storm, the rain before yet more fire and days of searing heat. Along the way, be captivated as Cunningham shares her Melbourne, its stories and its characters. In a new introduction, Cunningham returns to Melbourne after a period away and reflects on how much her city has changed since Melbourne was first published in 2011: it is hotter, greener and has endured the rollercoaster ride – from boom times to economic depression – that defined 2020. 'Cunningham has successfully captured the dynamics of a city in constant flux, while focusing on the essence of its inner life, which gives it an ambience quite unlike that found in any other Australian city.' – Robert Hefner, The Canberra Times 'It would be nice to imagine that the gift of this book to Melbourne is its greater capacity to understand itself and its webs of connection.' – David Sornig, Melbourne Review 'An admirable response to the impossible task of writing about a city its history, its present, its characters, its stories, its politics and its personal meaning in a single, accessible volume when any one of these themes should take several. Cunningham is communicating this city's soul as though it's a person, full of contradictions but with an essential character.' — Waleed Aly, The Sunday Age 'This beautiful book provokes nostalgia and deeper thinking about the events, places and people who have defined Melbourne.' — Herald Sun 'Cunningham is communicating this city's soul as though it's a person, full of contradictions but with an essential character.' — Waleed Aly, Australian Book Review

Black The Night And Wild The Sea written by Vincent Smith and has been published by Xulon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02 with History categories.

Black the Night and Wild the Sea is a story of adventure and intrigue set in the turbulent era of the Australian gold rushes. It is also a love story between two very different characters: Michael Byrnes, a warm hearted but roguish Irish adventurer, and Sele Kanawa, a beautiful and passionate Eurasian missionary. The story ranges from the wild southern coast of Australia to the jungles of the Cape York Peninsula and the wild unexplored islands of Melanesia, where brutal sea captains abducted natives to work as virtual slave labourers, and missionaries risked their lives to stop them. It is also a tale of a woman torn between her love for God and the work she feels called to do, and her love for a man determined to make his fortune. Vincent Smith grew up in an industrial town in England and moved to Australia when he was sixteen. It was then that he fell under the spell of the islands of the South West Pacific and their turbulent history. For the past half century he has served as a minister and chaplain to the Australian army, police and emergency services; some of it in the places where this story is set.

Vagrant Lives In Colonial Australasia written by Catharine Coleborne and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-04 with Political Science categories.

Investigating the history of vagrants in colonial Australia and New Zealand, this book provides insights into the histories and identities of marginalised peoples in the British Pacific Empire. Showing how their experiences were produced, shaped and transformed through laws and institutions, it reveals how the most vulnerable people in colonial society were regulated, marginalised and criminalised in the imperial world. Studying the language of vagrancy prosecution, narratives of mobility and welfare, vagrant families, gender and mobility and the political, social and cultural interpretations of vagrancy, this book sets out a conceptual framework of mobility as a field of inquiry for legal and historical studies. Defining 'mobility' as population movement and the occupation of new social and physical space, it offers an entry point to the related histories of penal colonies and new 'settler' societies. It provides insights into shared histories of vagrancy across New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand, and explores how different jurisdictions regulated mobility within the temporal and geographical space of the British Pacific Empire.
