Sometimes life hands you lemons. In this collection of jokes, autobiography, and personal philosophy, author and businessman Dr. J. T. Dock Houk makes an ocean of lemonade. Life’s a Joke compiles four books – “It’s All About Me,” “My Life with a Girl,” “Kids and Pets,” and “Life Around Us” – recounting 1,162 jokes, funny anecdotes, and descriptions of Sunday morning comics, clippings of which Dock has been collecting for an incredible amount of decades. As the author writes, “What I mean to convey by saying ‘life is a joke’ is that humor has helped me over some of the rough spots by showing me a side of life that either explains what I am feeling, or gives me a glimpse of something I also see. Humor, whose visual expression is often a joke, makes me smile or even laugh out loud. And sometimes, if you don’t laugh, you might cry.” So crack open Life’s a Joke and crack a smile. You might learn a little wisdom – but if not, at least you’ll get a laugh

Lives With Autism written by Dr Steve Mee and has been published by M&K Update Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-12 with Psychology categories.

What is autism really like? Academic literature often defines autism in a clinical, pathology-orientated way, whereas personal testimony can tell health and social care professionals how it feels. This book presents personal accounts from people whose lives have been touched by the day-to-day realities of autism: people with autism, professionals who interact with them, their parents and their siblings. The stories are mostly told ‘straight’, with brief introductory comments and a few reflections at the end of each chapter. As Autism Programme Leader at the University of Cumbria for the past 13 years, Steve Mee is uniquely placed to compile such a book. He has met, and befriended, many people with autism and their families. Through listening to their stories, he has had moments of profound challenge and insight. In this book, he shares these personal narratives and what he has learnt from them. Reading these accounts will enable professionals to develop a real understanding of what it is like to live with autism, in all its nuanced detail. This in turn can provide vital insights into the impact (both positive and negative) of professional interventions.

Captured from the rich oral and written history of her extended family, Grace's story gives us unique insight into a lost era of hardy pioneers of 1820 settler origin whose influence and legacy have left an indelible impression on the multicultural South African of today. Letters, articles, and newspaper excerpts offer fascinating personal accounts of those turbulent times in the Transkei of the 1800s and early 1900s. Included is a letter written by her grandfather, detailing his dealings with Mhlonhlo, the powerful Pondo chief of the time and an antecedent of the great Nelson Mandela whose kraal was situated not far from many of the events described in this book. This is also the uplifting story of an inquisitive, courageous, and intrepid woman making her way in the dynamically changing world of twentieth and twenty-first century South Africa. In short, it is, as the title states, Our Story.

Lives Together Worlds Apart written by Suzanna Danuta Walters and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-10 with Social Science categories.

In the 1940s film Now, Voyager, Bette Davis plays a daughter struggling against her mother's stifling repression. Nearly fifty years later, in the Hollywood saga Postcards from the Edge, Shirley MacLaine, as a neglectful and bossy mother, inflicts untold psychological pain on her daughter, played by Meryl Streep. These dramas of conflict and the ambivalent struggle for separation have been central to popular images of mothers and daughters in the last half-century in the U.S. Walters boldly challenges these dichotomies and proposes an innovative and multilayered understanding of the cultural construction of the mother/daughter relationship. In a discussion of popular media ranging from themes of maternal martyrdom to maternal malevolence, Walters shows that since World War II, mainstream culture has generally represented the mother/daughter relationship as one of never-ending conflict and thus promoted an "ideology of separation" as necessary to the daughter's emancipation and maturity. This ideological move is placed in a social context of the anti-woman backlash of the early post-war period and the renewed anti-feminism of the Reagan and Bush years. Walters uses exceptions to mainstream imagery-films such as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, television shows like "Maude," novels like The Joy Luck Club-to offer evidence of alternative traditions and paradigms. Timely and vividly argued, Lives Together/Worlds Apart makes a brilliant contribution to discussions of popular culture and feminism.
