C'est le premier volume d'une initiation au latin, qui se veut linguistique et littéraire. Pour s'initier à une langue, il importe d'avoir, préalablement, une certaine idée sur ses particularités linguistiques et, avant tout, sur ses particularités morphologiques. C'est ce que fait la première partie de ce volume, qui est une introduction à la grammaire latine. Cette introduction, qui, faite dans l'esprit de la linguistique moderne, pourrait paraître difficile et technique, est en réalité beaucoup plus simple que la description habituelle des grammaires latines scolaires. Elle permet d'aborder la deuxième partie de ce volume, qui initie à la pratique du latin, en faisant lire des extraits d'un roman latin qui raconte les mésaventures d'un certain Lucius passionné de magie. Il s'agit effectivement d'une simple lecture, mais d'une lecture particulière, puisque les textes latins sont présentés sur plusieurs lignes à la fois : une première ligne contenant le texte latin tel qu'il est édité, puis une deuxième ligne présentant la prononciation du texte latin, une troisième ligne fournissant le découpage en morphèmes ou en unités morphologiques du texte latin, et une quatrième ligne donnant la valeur ou le signifié de ces unités, ces quatre lignes étant bien sûr alignées, et enfin une dernière ligne pour la traduction française de ce texte latin. Mais cette initiation au latin ne veut pas être que linguistique, elle entend être aussi littéraire. Elle présentera, dans un second volume, une troisième partie qui sera un survol de toute la littérature latine, et une quatrième partie, qui proposera une lecture des extraits les plus célèbres de tous les plus grands écrivains latins, lecture sur quatre lignes alignées bien sûr !
