Recent political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia have prompted scholars from several disciplines to research the singularity of this region and of the territories of the old Crown of Aragon. National linguistic ideology has been at the base of most historical processes that –whether they are complete or not – have brought us to the current reality: a world of languages that represent, with greater or lesser exactitude, the diversity – and convergences – of human groups. Various of today’s thinkers have predicted the decline or even the end of national ideologies. In the area of language, postmodernism would make the linguistic affiliation of the community individuals irrelevant, de-ideologise language use, and extend plurilingualism and language alternation in association with a new distribution of (physical or functional) spaces of linguistic practice. But is this true everywhere? Are languages now nowhere the core of collective identity? Or are we witnessing a distinction between languages that, because of their magnitude, status, strategic position, etc., can continue to exercise the function of national languages and languages that have to renounce this function? Has national linguistic ideology really ceased to make sense? What other strategies should the historic language of a given geographic area employ if it wants to continue forming part of the life of the community that is set up there? What kinds of languages are desired by politicians, intellectuals and philologists? This book aims to bring some thoughts about these questions.

Nous veïns a la ciutat ens parla de la València dels immigrants: la distribució residencial, com s'insereixen en els espais públics i el teixit social, quines relacions mantenen amb la resta del veïnat... La situació a València es compara amb altres ciutats, com Barcelona i Mont-real, i s'analitzen les formes d'inserció urbana, que presenten fenòmens comuns a tots els grans nuclis urbans (barris de població immigrant, espais de sociabilitat pròpia, negocis ètnics...). La segona part del llibre se centra a Russafa, segurament el barri més multicultural de València: la vida quotidiana al carrer, la plaça i el mercat ens mostra les dinàmiques que s'hi generen, no sense problemes i tensions, des de la convivència pacifica però distant fins a altres de menys inclusives. Aquest treball va obtenir el segon guardó del Premi d'Investigació Cultural «Marqués de Lozoya» (2005), atorgat pel Ministeri de Cultura. Francesc Torres Pérez (Teresa de Cofrents, 1957) és treballador social, sociòleg i doctor en Sociologia per la Universitat de València. Els seus treballs s'han centrat en el procés d'inserció dels immigrants extracomunitaris al País Valencià i a Espanya, amb particular atenció als vessants social, identitari i de polítiques públiques. Dels diferents escenaris socials on es dóna aquest procés, les seues recerques destaquen la importància de la inserció urbana dels nous veïns, de la sociabilitat i de la convivència quotidiana, i de les transformacions que s'estan produint als nostres pobles i ciutats. Entre altres publicacions és coeditor del llibre Inmigrantes, ¿cómo los tenemos'. Algunos desafíos y (malas) respuestas (2002) i La participación de los inmigrantes en el ámbito local (2006). Actualment és professor al Departamento de Sociología y Política Social de la Universidad de Murcia.
