In den Literaturen und Kulturen der ehemaligen Kolonien Frankreichs, Spaniens und Portugals finden kleine Formen wie Aphorismen und Sprichwörter auffallend häufig Verwendung, sowohl in Form von Aphorismen- und Sprichwörtersammlungen als auch eingebettet in narrative, dramatische, lyrische, essayistische oder journalistische Texte. Kern der untersuchten geographischen Gebiete bilden die Karibik sowie die historisch und politisch mit ihr eng verbundenen Regionen in Lateinamerika, Afrika und Europa. Entgegen der literaturgeschichtlichen Tendenz, das gelehrt-literarische Genre des Aphorismus und die populäre Gattung der Sprichwörter strikt voneinander zu trennen, betrachtet die Autorin diese beiden Formen als Teil eines Gattungsarchipels, in dem unterschiedliche kleine Formen durch ein Netz von Ähnlichkeiten miteinander verbunden sind. Auf dieser Grundlage zeigt sie Funktionsweisen kleiner Formen jenseits traditioneller Kategorisierungen auf: Kleine Formen bewegen sich in den untersuchten post-kolonialen Kontexten zwischen lebenspraktischer Einbettung und künstlerischer Autonomie, zwischen lokalem Bewusstsein, universellem Anspruch und Kosmopolitismus, zwischen ethnographischer Vereinnahmung und kulturellem Widerstand.

Zwischen 1996 und 2011 gab es in Spanien intensive öffentliche Debatten über den Umgang mit der jüngeren Vergangenheit. In diesem erinnerungspolitischen Kampf um Deutungshoheit wurden populärkulturelle Kino- und TV-Produktionen mit zeithistorischem Sujet zu Multiplikatoren mit katalysatorischem Wirkungspotenzial. Sie konstruierten Vergangenheit aktiv von zeitgenössischen Prämissen aus und trugen so maßgeblich zur Konsolidierung bzw. Wandlung historischer Meistererzählungen bei. Umso drängender stellt sich die Frage, welche Geschichte darin wie inszeniert wurde. Dem widmet sich Caroline Rothauge aus einer erinnerungskulturellen Perspektive, die eine systematische Rückbindung der einzelnen Produktionen an ihren jeweiligen Entstehungskontext und Rezeptionszusammenhang einschließt. Ihre Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es unerlässlich ist, populärkulturelle Medienangebote zu berücksichtigen, will man die Pluralität, Prozesshaftigkeit und Dynamik heutiger Erinnerungskulturen verstehen. A memory boom can be observed in Spain since 1996 in which film and TV productions serve to assimilate but also to update historical master narratives of recent history. Popular cinema and television productions with a historical subject matter actively construct the past starting off present beliefs, thus producing visions of reality which are characteristic of the very context they arose from. This study therefore focuses on the question what version of the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War and Franco's dictatorship was represented in Spanish film and TV productions between 1996 and 2011. The sense such productions convey via specific modes of representations and narrative techniques is analysed considering their relationship to and their potential function in Spanish memory cultures. In so doing, Caroline Rothauge demonstrates that it is indispensable to consider popular media in order to understand the plurality, processual quality and the dynamics of today's memory cultures.

This book contributes to a re-visioning of the literature of revolutions, repositioning the writings of Subcomandante Marcos as quasi-“indigenous” literary texts. Highlights include a study of the role of Zapatista mythopoetics in re-imagining the nature of revolution; and an examination of how a native subculture and cosmovision were made intelligible to an international audience. Close readings of a group of stories, essays and communiques by Marcos explore the emergence of a thoroughly hybrid literary style. These texts are analyzed in relation to existing genres such Native American literature, environmental literature, and the literature of the Mexican revolution. The book shows that, while Marcos employs the iconography of Che Guevara, Zapata, et al, and in some ways furthers the “romance of revolution” for an electronically networked world, he has also popularized on an international stage the post-Cold War aspiration to “change the world without taking power.”

In November 2002, an international conference was held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in London in order to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Hermann Hesse’s birth. Twenty distinguished speakers from North and South America, Russia, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom attended the three-day conference with the specific aim of exploring the continuing importance of this widely read German-language author. This volume brings together the various responses to the complex challenge that Hesse, whose sheer success is sometimes seen as detracting from his status, presents to literary scholarship around the world. This book presents the results of extensive international comparative research into the effects of the economic and financial crisis on democratic institutions and social cohesion policies. The collected studies describe and analyse the measures (often referred to as "reforms") adopted to counter the crisis and the effects of these measures.It investigates three areas: the impact on the functioning of institutions, with respect to the relationship between representative institutions and governments, and the organisational structure of administrations at national and local levels; the impact that the austerity policies on public spending have on social rights; and the impact on traditional instruments of public action (administrative simplification, public services delivering, the use of common assets).The general findings highlight the effect of reducing the administrative and government capacity of the democratic institutions: the public sector, rather than being innovative and made more effective, declines, offering increasingly poor public services and making bad decisions, fuelling substantive or formal privatisation solutions, which in turn cause further weakening.
