Umberto Terracini può a buon diritto essere considerato uno dei personaggi più significativi della vicenda politica del Novecento italiano, del quale ha attraversato molti dei momenti più importanti. Per la prima volta, un libro ne ricostruisce per intero la biografia: dagli anni formativi dell’adesione al socialismo alla fondazione dell’«Ordine Nuovo» con Gramsci, Togliatti e Tasca, poi la scissione di Livorno, vissuta da protagonista, e la militanza nel Partito comunista, del quale fu subito un dirigente di spicco. Passato attraverso il carcere, il confino, il doloroso allontanamento dal partito, la guerra e la Resistenza, fino ad approdare alla carica di presidente dell’Assemblea costituente, che gli concesse il privilegio di apporre la sua firma in calce al testo della Costituzione repubblicana. Figura di grande spessore umano e morale, continuò negli anni successivi ad assumere posizioni originali e controcorrente, ad esempio negli anni settanta, quando si oppose con forza alla politica del compromesso storico voluta da Berlinguer, e nel periodo più cupo del terrorismo, durante il quale si distinse per la sua posizione in difesa della vita di Aldo Moro, schierandosi a favore della trattativa con le Brigate rosse per la liberazione del prigioniero. Altrettanti spunti che, come scrive Aldo Agosti nell’introduzione al volume, fanno dell’avventura umana e politica di Terracini «una storia affascinante».
