«Non è facile sopportare pensieri così intelligenti, audaci e impertinenti» scriveva Freud a Groddeck nel febbraio del 1920 a proposito dello "Scrutatore d’anime". Questo singolare romanzo, l’unico che Groddeck abbia scritto, era stato fino allora rifiutato da vari editori, piuttosto scandalizzati dal suo contenuto, e fu proprio Freud a farlo accogliere fra le pubblicazioni della casa ufficiale del movimento psicoanalitico, il Psychoanalytischer Verlag, e con tutti gli onori: «Dobbiamo tutti dirle grazie per il sorriso delizioso con cui, nel suo "Scrutatore d’anime", ha rappresentato le nostre indagini sull’anima, altrimenti tanto serie». La straordinaria idea di Groddeck, nello "Scrutatore d’anime", è di fare dell’Es il protagonista di un romanzo. Il "romanzo psicoanalitico" annunciato nel sottotitolo diventa allora innanzitutto uno sfrenato romanzo picaresco, scosso da una inesauribile comicità e allegria, cronaca del grave sconquasso prodotto dall’irruzione dell’Es nei più vari ambienti della Germania prussiana – nelle birrerie e nelle prigioni, fra principi e truffatori, socialisti e femministe, militari e medici, donne leggere e signore prudes. Portatore, eroe e vittima dell’Es è qui un borghese di mezza età, scapolo e benestante, che conduce una vita quieta e lievemente ottusa fino al giorno in cui una rivelazione improvvisa lo convince ad abbandonare ogni sua idea precedente e perfino il suo nome e a gettarsi all’avventura, trasformandosi in un geniale buffone, totalmente privo di senso del pudore e della dignità, insieme regredito all’infanzia e asceso alla saggezza, pronto a diffondere ovunque una buona novella che tutti giudicano assolutamente sconveniente, ma da cui tutti, in qualche modo, rimangono contagiati. Il contagio interiore è, di fatto, il grande mezzo con cui l’Es opera nel mondo le sue mirabili trasformazioni. Ed è proprio questa la folgorante visione che ha fatto del borghese August Müller il trickster Thomas Weltlein. Nel corso di una snervante lotta da lui ingaggiata contro un esercito di cimici che avevano invaso la sua camera da letto, il signor Müller prende la scarlattina, delira e, una volta guarito, si accorge che la sua malattia ha sterminato le cimici, che ne sono rimaste contagiate. Scocca a questo punto la scintilla della rivelazione, August Müller diventa Thomas Weltlein e comincia a vivere una nuova vita, guidato dall’Es. Da quel momento attraverseremo con lui una galleria di personaggi disparati (che compongono fra l’altro una satira scorticante della Germania), subito coinvolti da Weltlein in conversazioni intimissime e irriverenti, e ben presto apparirà chiaro che non solo i discorsi di Weltlein espongono le teorie di Groddeck, talvolta in formulazioni ‘selvagge’ che solo in questo testo ha osato, ma che anche altri tratti di questo incantevole personaggio rimandano alla persona Groddeck. Mai, infatti, come attraverso il suo felice alter ego «scrutatore d’anime» Groddeck è riuscito a parlare senza riguardi verso il persecutorio buon senso, accettando con tranquilla ironia il ruolo del folle. E mai, soprattutto, è riuscito a comunicare con altrettanta intensità quel sentimento di esilarante liberazione che la scoperta dell’Es suscitò in lui – e dovrebbe suscitare nella vita di tutti.
