Notwithstanding the wealth of material published about St Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) in the context of medieval scholarship, and the wealth of visual material regarding her, there is a dearth of published scholarship concerning her cult in the early modern period. This work examines the representations of St Clare in the Italian visual tradition from the thirteenth century on, but especially between the fifteenth and the mid-seventeenth centuries, in the context of mendicant activity. Through an examination of such diverse visual images as prints, drawings, panels, sculptures, minor arts, and frescoes in relation to sermons of Franciscan preachers, starting in the thirteenth century but focusing primarily on the later tradition of early modernity, the book highlights the cult of women saints and its role in the reform movements of the Osservanza and the Catholic Reformation and in the face of Muslim-Christian encounter of the early modern era. Debby?s analyses of the preaching of the times and iconographic examination of neglected artistic sources makes the book a significant contribution to research in art history, sermon studies, gender studies, and theology.

Se questa disciplina avvia il predicatore all’arte del discorso e della parola, Bonhoeffer ci ricorda tuttavia che la sua sorgente è in Dio e non nelle doti umane. «Il lettore si accorgerà che l’omiletica di Bonhoeffer è strutturalmente anti-moderna. E proprio qui stanno la sua forza, la sua sfida e il suo limite. La preoccupazione omiletica di Bonhoeffer si concentra sul cuore del messaggio evangelico. È a partire da questa pulsazione centrale che si struttura un’omiletica evangelica. Si tratta di un presupposto di ordine “non-scientifico” rispetto alla scientificità della comunicazione moderna con cui oggi ci confrontiamo; ma è precisamente in questo punto che si situa il fondamento a partire dal quale l’omiletica può aprirsi in tutta libertà alle varie scienze della comunicazione. Although there is an obvious association between pilgrimage and place, relatively little research has centred directly on the role of architecture. Architecture and Pilgrimage, 1000-1500: Southern Europe and Beyond synthesizes the work of a distinguished international group of scholars. It takes a broad view of architecture, to include cities, routes, ritual topographies and human interaction with the natural environment, as well as specific buildings and shrines, and considers how these were perceived, represented and remembered. The essays explore both the ways in which the physical embodiment of pilgrimage cultures is shared, and what we can learn from the differences. The chosen period reflects the flowering of medieval and early modern pilgrimage. The perspective is that of the pilgrim journeying within - or embarking from - Southern Europe, with a particular emphasis on Italy. The book pursues the connections between pilgrimage and architecture through the investigation of such issues as theology, liturgy, patronage, miracles and healing, relics, and individual and communal memory. Moreover, it explores how pilgrimage may be regarded on various levels, from a physical journey towards a holy site to a more symbolic and internalized idea of pilgrimage of the soul.
