Il problema dell’interpretazione delle Scritture – innanzitutto di quelle sacre, ma, in fondo, di ogni scrittura – coincide con la storia stessa della cultura occidentale. Non deve stupire, allora, che un’inchiesta archeologica, come quella qui proposta, sul problema dell’interpretazione da Origene ad Auerbach, dal Talmud a Benjamin, possa riservare delle sorprese. L’esegesi medievale dei quattro sensi della Scrittura non si muove, infatti, secondo la rappresentazione corrente, fra quattro significati sostanzialmente omogenei, la cui interpretazione potrebbe continuare all’infinito; essa implica alla fine un vertiginoso salto verticale che culmina al di là della scrittura. Il senso anagogico o spirituale non è un altro senso letterale o storico – è, piuttosto, la comprensione perfetta o l’adempimento del senso letterale, in cui l’innalzamento del significato storico coincide con la fine dei tempi e con l’avvento del Regno. Che cosa significa, infatti, adempiere il senso e la figura contenuti nella scrittura, se non portare a compimento il linguaggio stesso e la storia degli uomini? Ma che cos’è un linguaggio adempiuto? Qui il problema dell’interpretazione delle Scritture si rivela inseparabile dall’etica e dalla politica. Non soltanto la lettera della tradizione, che ci trasmette materialmente i testi delle Scritture, è sempre guasta e corrotta e non può mai condurci all’originale, ma è possibile guardare alla vita stessa come una scrittura di cui i fatti e gli eventi nei quali sembra risolversi costituiscono il senso letterale, ma il cui vero senso appare soltanto a chi sa percepirli come figure di un senso spirituale che occorre ogni volta decifrare. La distinzione fra senso letterale e senso spirituale, fra figura e adempimento non si applica soltanto alla Scrittura, ma anche alla vita. È possibile, cioè, guardare alla vita come una scrittura di cui i fatti e gli eventi nei quali essa sembra risolversi costituiscono il senso letterale, ma il cui vero senso appare soltanto a chi sa percepirli come figure di un senso spirituale che occorre decifrare. E come la Scrittura può irrigidirsi in un canone o restare viva nella sua tradizione, così la vita può esaurirsi in una serie di episodi e aneddoti insignificanti o trovare invece il suo senso e la sua verità. «Ogni creatura del mondo è nello specchio come un libro e una pittura; un segno fedele della nostra vita e della nostra morte, del nostro stato e della nostra sorte».
