This study explores representations of the insurgency on screen, and asks what these tell us about the relationship between state, fiction cinema and identity in Peru. In the process, Sarah Barrow highlights the Peruvian experience as a paradigm for the wider study of film-making in societies faced with violence and terrorism. This book provides in-depth analyses of the pivotal films from the 1980s through to the present day that interpret the events, characters and consequences of the bloody conflict. Setting the films in the context of a time of turbulent transition for both Peruvian society and cinema - addressing developments in film policy and production - it reveals the attempts by filmmakers to reflect, shape, define and contest the identity of a fractured population. By interrogating important themes such as memory, trauma and cultural responses to terrorism, chapters explore local perception of nationhood, and highlight links to other Latin American cinemas and global issues. Como él mismo Jorge Mañach señala, Perfil de nuestras letras surgió de una sugerencia de la dirección del periódico Diario de la Marina, para que comenzase a redactar una serie de artículos en los cuales desarrollara algún tema continuo. Entre febrero de 1947 y octubre de 1948 publicó 34 trabajos, que siempre salían en la edición dominical y en la página de Opinión (esto último solo se alteró en una ocasión). Al cabo de casi ocho años, en mayo de 1956 decidió continuar la serie "por algún tiempo más". Lo hizo hasta comienzos de agosto de ese año. En esta segunda entrega, la serie mantuvo el espacio dominical hasta fines de junio, cuando pasó a salir indistintamente miércoles, jueves o viernes. Asimismo desde mayo redujo el nombre a Nuestras letras. Edición a cargo de: Carlos Espinosa.

Globalization and falling government support have fueled cross-border collaborations, calling into question the idea of a movie's "nationality," and leaving some nations' film industries on the brink of collapse. Whether thriving or barely surviving, struggling to remain distinct or embracing globalization on its own terms, addressing the government or society, Latin American cinema remains vibrant, offering a wealth of material to scholars of all stripes. These collected essays explore important elements of Latin American cinema and its associated national film industries. The first section of essays examines the impact of modernization on both Latin American screen images and the industry itself, offering modern and historical perspectives. The second section focuses on filmmakers who deal with issues of gender and sexuality, whether sexual transgression, the role of female characters, or societal attitudes towards sex and nudity.
