The focus of this book is the modeling of the location of economic activities, measured in terms of employment, in land-use and transportation systems. These measures are key inputs to models at intra-urban scales of the flows of persons and goods for both urban and transport planning. The models described here are either components of comprehensive models or specialist studies. Economic activities can be defined in terms of jobs or private-sector firms and public service organisations. Different levels of aggregation are used both in terms of organisational and geographical dimensions. In the case of firms and public organizations, a distinction can be made between the organizations themselves and corresponding establishments. For urban simulation models, it is the location of establishments that is important. At the more coarse levels of aggregation that are usually used in comprehensive models, firms and organizations are aggregated into sectors.

The spatial distribution of the human population can be well expressed as the location of the activities of this population. Among these, economic activities play a most important role as determinants of and determined by population distribution. The intention of the present study is to revise the theories explaining locational distribution of economic activities, by adjusting their assumptions to the characteristics of the contemporary environment, with the purpose of selecting the most important variables rather than augmenting their number. The present research is concerned only with agricultural production and land use and the effects that emerging locational distributions of the agricultural system may have on the regional structure of the country. Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Cultural Studies - Basics and Definitions, grade: A, Ewha Womans University (Graduate School of International Studies), course: Comparative Society and Culture, 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with three of the original six different topics about spatial locations. Namely, Maps, Nations and Regions and Spatial Segregation. The whole analysis refers solely to three countries: the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Ecuador. Nevertheless, following the example of Carol Delany in her book "Investigating Culture", the most important and most specific examples of these topics of spatial locations within these countries will be given - focusing on concrete examples. The aim of this term paper is to analyze the three countries from three different continents regarding their specific understandings of their map, their nation(s), their region, and spatial segregation inside the country. Thus, one can say that the content of this work refers to the historical part of space / spatial locations within these countries. After an introduction, in the main part, beginning with the description of the countries' maps the analysis starts with the actual situation of the countries' borders, meaning how these countries are geographically located in the world community and how they see themselves there today. Following, an analysis of the creation of the nation in connection with the region where this nation, or these nations, are located will be given, before under the last point of the main part the most important country-specific aspect of spatial segregation within the history of each of these countries will be examined. The result of the whole comparison - cultural equalities, inequalities, and similarities concerning the specific aspects of spatial locations between these countries - will be given in the conclusion of the paper.

Europe is getting closer. So are European social sciences. However, this is easier done in theory development and central research questions. When it comes to data the mutual understanding is far from perfect, due to a lack of knowledge about the data bases of the respective countries and the EU in general. This is particularly true when it comes to the regional level. This volume will help to improve the insight into the rich stock of European datasets which cover any kind of regional information. Many institutions ranging from statistical offices to more academic research centres and commercial enterprises report their offerings with special emphasis on the regional level (e.g. European Community Household Panel, European Social Survey, Labour Force Survey). Central categories such as NUTS and LAU are explained and discussed. In addition, typical examples of socio-economic cross-border and multi-level studies highlight the power of a regionalized European perspective. Furthermore, information about special tools for such type of analysis is included in the volume.

This unique book investigates the implications of the rising importance of supra-national regional organizations for global governance in general, and for the United Nations, in particular. It touches upon issues such as regional representation at the UN, high-level dialogues with regional organisations, as well as the coordination of UN member states’ voting behaviour in the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council. The book further explores the regional dimension and coordination of UN operations in areas such as peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development. The contributions to the book are both in-depth chapters and shorter viewpoints, written by a combination of academics, policy-makers at regional organizations, and experts from international think tanks. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of global governance.

The service sector in most advanced economies accounts for up to seventy percent of employment and GDP and, given its growing importance, has received much research attention over the last two decades. However, not very much attention has been paid to the relationship between this sector and both its territorial impact and regional effects. The main objective of this book is to offer a comprehensive approach to these aspects, focusing particularly on the location factors of service industries and the importance of some specific services, such as business services and knowledge and information services. The contributions have been prepared by well-known experts in the field from a wide number of countries. The focus of all contributions is not only on theoretical aspects, but also provides empirical analyses on specific countries and topics such as the geographical concentration, globalization impacts, foreign direct investments, and innovation.
