While many Western scholars have discussed the technical aspects of Balinese music or the traditional contexts for performance, little has been written in Western languages about Balinese discourses on their music. This dissertation seeks to understand the experience of music in Bali according to Balinese voices through an analysis of oral and written dialogues on music, mainly by musicians and dalangs (shadow play puppeteers) from the village of Sukawati, scholars, teachers, administrators and students from the Indonesian College of the Arts (STSI) in the City of Denpasar. The study examines the influence of modernization on the traditional arts and their role in society. A concentration on Balinese discourses enables individual performers and scholars to represent themselves to a greater extent than previously seen in ethnomusicological scholarship, making this study more of a critical discussion among equals than a Western interpretation of 'others'. This approach permits a rare view into contemporary Balinese conceptions and practices of music.

Bunga angin berarti aroma ombak atau angin sepoi-sepoi yang mendahului badai. Oleh karena itu buku Bungan Angin Portugis di Nusantara ini merupakan kumpulan narasi tentang jejak-jejak Portugis di Nusantara yang telah memberikan warna unik kepada kehidupan masyarakat Indonesia yang disentuhnya. Hanya sedikit peneliti Indonesia yang memberikan perhatian kepada warisan sejarah ini, walaupun banyak hal dalam kehidupan kita hari ini tidak bisa dilepaskan dari fakta sejarah tersebut. Penerbitan kembali karya Paramita R. Abdurachman tentang sumber-sumber sejarah Portugis di Indonesia yang selama ini tersebar di berbagai jurnal, merupakan suatu upaya mengajak generasi muda Indonesia untuk memahami masa lalu masyarakat kita bagi kebaikan masa depan bangsa, khusunya dalam menata hubungan antar bangsa.

Leela Prasad's riveting book presents everyday stories on subjects such as deities, ascetics, cats, and cooking along with stylized, publicly delivered ethical discourse, and shows that the study of oral narrative and performance is essential to ethical inquiry. Prasad builds on more than a decade of her ethnographic research in the famous Hindu pilgrimage town of Sringeri, Karnataka, in southwestern India, where for centuries a vibrant local culture has flourished alongside a tradition of monastic authority. Oral narratives and the seeing-and-doing orientations that are part of everyday life compel the question: How do individuals imagine the normative, and negotiate and express it, when normative sources are many and diverging? Moral persuasiveness, Prasad suggests, is intimately tied to the aesthetics of narration, and imagination plays a vital role in shaping how people create, refute, or relate to "text," "moral authority," and "community."
