1939 - Landesausstellung: Unweit des Festgeländes in Zürich wird an einem Spätsommerabend ein Säugling in einer Kartonschachtel aufgefunden. Das Findelkind kommt zur städtischen Fürsorge und wird Jahre später von einem kinderlosen Ehepaar aus der Innerschweiz adoptiert. Der Bub verbringt seine Kindheit auf einem Bauerngut - dem 'Loch' - in Bürglen am Lungernsee. Im Zentrum dieser Kinderwelt steht Ätti, der schwadronierende Grossvater, der das Bätziwasser liebt und die Feste feiert, wie sie fallen. Lebenslustig ist auch der Vater, er arbeitet im Holzbau und ist viel unterwegs. Mutter ist fromm und empfängt den Dorfkaplan bei Schinken und Rauchwurst zu erbaulichen Gesprächen. Dass der Kleine dem Adoptivvater gleicht, sorgt für Gespött, darüber gesprochen wird nicht. Des Rätsels Lösung liegt im Nachlass der Mutter. Unzimperlich und oft hart ist das Leben in der kleinen Gemeinde. Nüchtern, unverblümt und doch mit Wärme erinnert sich Jeannot Bürgi an seine Kindheit in dieser katholisch-barocken Welt der Vierzigerjahre.

War Land on the Eastern Front is a study of a hidden legacy of World War I: the experience of German soldiers on the Eastern front and the long-term effects of their encounter with Eastern Europe. It presents an 'anatomy of an occupation', charting the ambitions and realities of the new German military state there. Using hitherto neglected sources from both occupiers and occupied, official documents, propaganda, memoirs, and novels, it reveals how German views of the East changed during total war. New categories for viewing the East took root along with the idea of a German cultural mission in these supposed wastelands. After Germany's defeat, the Eastern front's 'lessons' were taken up by the Nazis, radicalized, and enacted when German armies returned to the East in World War II. The complex and shifting relation between regionalism and modernity With its search for purity, honesty, modesty, and ‘fitness of purpose', the late 19th and early 20th century concept of architectural regionalism is seminal to the modern movement. In later historiography, however, regionalism in Europe was neglected and even labeled ‘backward'. The origins of this drastic change of perception can be traced to the 1930s, when regionalism as a positive form gradually turned into a ‘closed' form of regionalism, a folding back on one's own region as a defence mechanism in an economically and politically turbulent decade.
