There are several recent developments, scientific and practical demands which underline the need for a comprehensive approach to loess research. It should be emphasized that fertile soils formed during the Holocene on loess and other loose materials accumulated under the different Pleistocene environments; 80 per cent of world corn output is harvested from these soils. At the same time, the cultivation of loess regions easily leads to the erosion of the soil and the porous sediment; under technical establishments collapse occasionally occurs along with compaction and landslides. For this latter reason, the design and foundation of constructions necessites special care and involves extra costs. The characteristic properties, structure and material composition, and origin of loess, the overlying soils and the intercalated paleosols between loess horizons, fossil plants, animals and early man remains, their dating, paleoenvironments and, last but not least, the problems of providing the buildings on loess terrain with safe foundations are all important issues studied by a host of experts in various disciplines. A forum to such interdisciplinary topics is provided in this volume where the papers published present some recent methods in loess research for various purposes, the results of instrumented analyses, laboratory and field experiments and the application of the achievements in local studies and also in regional or continental comparison.

Volcanic Lakes written by Dmitri Rouwet and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-02 with Science categories.

This book aims to give an overview on the present state of volcanic lake research, covering topics such as volcano monitoring, the chemistry, dynamics and degassing of acidic crater lakes, mass-energy-chemical-isotopic balance approaches, limnology and degassing of Nyos-type lakes, the impact on the human and natural environment, the eruption products and impact of crater lake breaching eruptions, numerical modeling of gas clouds and lake eruptions, thermo-hydro-mechanical and deformation modeling, CO2 fluxes from lakes, volcanic lakes observed from space, biological activity, continuous monitoring techniques, and some aspects more. We hope to offer an updated manual on volcanic lake research, providing classic research methods, and point towards a more high-tech approach of future volcanic lake research and continuous monitoring.

For the first two thirds of our evolutionary history, we hominins were restricted to Africa. Dating from about two million years ago, hominin fossils first appear in Eurasia. This volume addresses many of the issues surrounding this initial hominin intercontinental dispersal. Why did hominins first leave Africa in the early Pleistocene and not earlier? What do we know about the adaptations of the hominins that dispersed - their diet, locomotor abilities, cultural abilities? Was there a single dispersal event or several? Was the hominin dispersal part of a broader faunal expansion of African mammals northward? What route or routes did dispersing populations take?

Submerged Prehistory written by Jonathan Benjamin and has been published by Oxbow Books Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Antiquities, Prehistoric categories.

Major events of human prehistory such as the post-glacial recolonization of Northern Europe and the spread of agriculture through the Mediterranean took place on landscapes that are now, at least partially, underwater. Large parts of this submerged terrain are accessible to divers and can be investigated archaeologically. Prehistoric underwater research has emerged in recent decades as a distinct sub-discipline, developing approaches and methodologies that can be applied in coastal regions worldwide. As a result there is growing awareness of the potential for underwater archaeology to transform our ideas about the course of prehistory. This volume examines existing practice and new developments in the field of submerged prehistoric landscape research. The 25 peer-reviewed contributions from leading authors cover the results of recent research on three continents and the application of methodologies and techniques for site discovery, investigation and interpretation.

Early Evolutionary History Of The Synapsida written by Christian F. Kammerer and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-20 with Science categories.

Non-mammalian synapsids were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates from the Late Carboniferous to the Middle Triassic and play a key role in understanding the origin and evolution of mammals. Despite these facts and the outstanding fossil record of the group, early synapsids remain obscure. This book showcases the full breadth of contemporary research on non-mammalian synapsids, ranging from taxonomy and phylogenetics to functional morphology, biogeography, paleoecology, and patterns of diversity. It also underscores the importance and potential of studying non-mammalian synapsid paleobiology in its own right, not just in the context of mammalian evolution.

Monogenetic Volcanism written by K. Németh and has been published by Geological Society of London this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-20 with Science categories.

The nature and origin of the small-scale volcanic systems, generally referred to as 'monogenetic', have enjoyed an elevated level of interest during the past decade. There has been recognition that their ostensibly simple volcano types are a window into the nature of explosive volcanism, landscape evolution and the processes of magma generation in the Earth’s upper mantle. In the past few years, major conferences have offered specialized technical sessions dealing with monogenetic volcanism and there have been thematic conferences, such as the IAVCEI International Maar Conference series, which have provided a focus for discussion of volcanological and geochemical aspects of small-scale basaltic volcanism. Many new aspects of monogenetic volcanism have emerged and have clearly demonstrated that this volcanism can be very complex on a fine scale. This book is a collection of papers arising from two recent Maar Conferences (the fifth in Queretaro Mexico and the sixth in Changchun, China) and serves as a snapshot of current research on monogenetic volcanism.
