The analysis of social phenomena, born from the articulation of the problem of HIV/AIDS and the notion of solidarity, helps to understand better the question of social dynamics. In the West African context, where a minority of the population benefits from social security, this study analyses the determining factors of the practices of solidarity within different groups in a relatively poor social class. What is at stake is to establish a typology of solidarity between the vulnerability of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), the practices of solidarity towards them, the principles and norms of their social group and the different political, economic and social contexts in which this solidarity takes place. The analysis of the discourses gathered from biographical interviews, group discussions and individual interviews helped to analyze the social phenomena that induce the practices of solidarity towards people living with HIV/AIDS in three West African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo). In these African contexts, the practices of solidarity towards PLWHA are not always systematic and uniform to every member of a social group. Further, the practice of solidarity derives from both reasonable actions and affective relations. In this context of marginalized social groups, the social dynamic of solidarity towards PLWHA redefines and reconstructs the concept of family based on agreement, affective feelings, mutual trust and reciprocity.

Inequality Socio Cultural Differentiation And Social Structures In Africa written by Dieter Neubert and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-25 with Social Science categories.

This book contends that conventional class concepts are not able to adequately capture social inequality and socio-cultural differentiation in Africa. Earlier empirical findings concerning ethnicity, neo-traditional authorities, patron-client relations, lifestyles, gender, social networks, informal social security, and even the older debate on class in Africa, have provided evidence that class concepts do not apply; yet these findings have mostly been ignored. For an analysis of the social structures and persisting extreme inequality in African societies – and in other societies of the world – we need to go beyond class, consider the empirical realities and provincialise our conventional theories. This book develops a new framework for the analysis of social structure based on empirical findings and more nuanced approaches, including livelihood analysis and intersectionality, and will be useful for students and scholars in African studies and development studies, sociology, social anthropology, political science and geography.

Fallen Soldiers written by George L. Mosse and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-12-12 with History categories.

At the outbreak of the First World War, an entire generation of young men charged into battle for what they believed was a glorious cause. Over the next four years, that cause claimed the lives of some 13 million soldiers--more than twice the number killed in all the major wars from 1790 to 1914. But despite this devastating toll, the memory of the war was not, predominantly, of the grim reality of its trench warfare and battlefield carnage. What was most remembered by the war's participants was its sacredness and the martyrdom of those who had died for the greater glory of the fatherland. War, and the sanctification of it, is the subject of this pioneering work by well-known European historian George L. Mosse. Fallen Soldiers offers a profound analysis of what he calls the Myth of the War Experience--a vision of war that masks its horror, consecrates its memory, and ultimately justifies its purpose. Beginning with the Napoleonic wars, Mosse traces the origins of this myth and its symbols, and examines the role of war volunteers in creating and perpetuating it. But it was not until World War I, when Europeans confronted mass death on an unprecedented scale, that the myth gained its widest currency. Indeed, as Mosse makes clear, the need to find a higher meaning in the war became a national obsession. Focusing on Germany, with examples from England, France, and Italy, Mosse demonstrates how these nations--through memorials, monuments, and military cemeteries honoring the dead as martyrs--glorified the war and fostered a popular acceptance of it. He shows how the war was further promoted through a process of trivialization in which war toys and souvenirs, as well as postcards like those picturing the Easter Bunny on the Western Front, softened the war's image in the public mind. The Great War ended in 1918, but the Myth of the War Experience continued, achieving its most ruthless political effect in Germany in the interwar years. There the glorified notion of war played into the militant politics of the Nazi party, fueling the belligerent nationalism that led to World War II. But that cataclysm would ultimately shatter the myth, and in exploring the postwar years, Mosse reveals the extent to which the view of death in war, and war in general, was finally changed. In so doing, he completes what is likely to become one of the classic studies of modern war and the complex, often disturbing nature of human perception and memory.

This book collects studies performed mainly with the support of the Agence Nationale de Recherche contre le Sida (French French National Agency of Research against AIDS). The purpose is to analyse the conditions to improve access to drugs against AIDS in developing countries, to urge on international agencies determinedly support patients treatment. The first part deals with the market of antiretrovirals and patents : How the prices drop taked place in 1998-2002, what were the debates about Intellectual Property Rights and WTO, what happened in countries as Brazil and Thailand? The second part deals with the impact of AIDS epidemic in the developing world and the role of therapeutic strategies to lower this impact. The book backs up the argument that the impact has been undersestimated and theses strategies are feasible.
