Mitä tajunta lopulta on? Entä mitä pitäisi ajatella väitteestä, jonka mukaan potilas tietää tulevia asioita? Lohduttajan kasvot on omistettu hoiva- ja hoitoalan tekijöille. Se kertoo sairaanhoitajan elämästä ja tutustumisesta omaan itseen. Kuvaus sairaanhoitajan työn aliarvostuksesta olisi jo yksinään kokonaisen kirjan arvoinen teema. Kysymyksessä onkin paitsi romaani, myös eräänlainen pamfletti. Teos on kaiken kaikkiaan monitasoinen seikkailu ristiriidasta sovintoon, menneestä tulevaan, kuolemasta elämään. Se tarjoaa lohdullisen ja toiveikkaan ikkunan mahdolliseen maailmaan, jossa kaiken perustana ovat myötätunto ja pyyteetön rakkaus. Nykyisenä pandemioiden aikana teos on mitä ajankohtaisin. Korona-aikaa on ennakoitu ja käsitelty kirjassa mahdollisesti yhtenä ensimmäisistä sairaalamaailmaa käsittelevistä fiktiivisistä teoksista, vaikkei se olekaan pääteema. Esikoisteoksensa Tempus ater tekijä kirjoitti sikainfluenssapandemian aikoihin. Kantavana teemana olivat tuolloin maailmanlaajuinen mutatoituneen H1N1-viruksen aiheuttama pandemia sekä siihen liittyneet salaliittoteoriat. Tämänkertainen teos pohtii oheisteemanaan tietoisuuden olemusta sekä ottaa kantaa tekoälyn moraaliin. Voiko koneesta tulla tietoinen? Pitäisikö sen olla tietoinen pystyäkseen toimimaan ihmisten kanssa? Onko sillä sielu? Yksilön ja yhteiskunnan haasteet, kuten mielenterveyden ongelmat, eutanasia, kestävä kehitys ja tasa-arvoisuus antavat kertomukselle raamit. Pakkoajatuksista kärsivä henkilö on romaanin päärooleja. Tämäkin on hyvin tärkeä aihe. Kukapa meistä ei tuntisi ympäristöstään yhtään tällaisista neurooseista kärsivää? Teoksen päähenkilö eli kertoja on vuonna 1980 syntynyt nainen, joka käy tarinassaan läpi pitkän aikaperspektiivin vuosituhannen vaihteesta aina 2050-luvun mahdolliseen tulevaisuuteen, jossa ovat vuorovaikutuksessa pelon yhteisön ja ihanneyhteiskunnan elementit. Mieskirjailija eläytyy naisen osaan ja sairaalamaailmaan herkällä ja sensuellilla otteella. Naisen kipuja ja vuoropuhelua oman sekä vanhemman ja nuoremman sukupolven kanssa kuvataan lämpimällä ja elämänläheisellä tavalla. Teos korostaa, että yksilön ja yhteisön valinnat ratkaisevat, millainen tulevaisuuden maailma on. Tämän kirjan henkinen ja hengellinen anti lienee monelle lukijalle suureksi lohduksi näinä vaikeina ja epävarmoina aikoina, joita parhaillaan elämme.
